OUTBREAK OF INFLUENZA
IN MILD FORM.
SCHOOLS CLOSED
As a result of the increase in the number of cases of influenza in the Auckland Education District, tho Board of Education, in conformity with instructions received from the District Health Officer decided to close the schools in the district from yesterday. The schools will remain closed until Monday, May 10, unless an improvement in the position justifies their reopening earlier. As far as the Pukekohe schools are concerned we were informed yesterday that about 50 children were suffering from influenza, but in a mild form. The idea of the Department in closing the schools was to prevent the juveniles from congregating together ancQhus fause a spread of the "flu" and transform it into an epidemic such as was experienced a few months ago. At the same time it is imperative that all the usual precautions should be taken to prevent the spread or increase the severity of the malady. Besides the number of children affected quite a number of adults are at present indisposed, some of the cases being rather severe.
