ABOUT DOGS
NUMEROUS VARIETIES. FRANKLIN WINTER SHOW. When prehistoric man roamed the wilderness and hunted on the plains, his constant companions wer& his horse and his dogs. On -them he trusted for his food and safety. The fleetness of the horse helped him to escape. The keen scent of the dog warned him of the hidden enemy or discovered the quarry. "What is bred in the bone cannor be driven out of the flesh," says the proverb; and this love of horse and clog which we have inherited from cur prehistoric ancestors, still holds a strong position in our characters. Lovers of dogs will have every opportunity to gratify their fancy during Franklin WinteH Show week, which runs from Wednesday, 19th. to Saturday. 22nd. May, -inclusive. On the 21st and.22nd the present produce hall on tiie showground will be handed over to the dog show. At present the schedule is being printed, and it comprises 287 elas.se:. for dogs and nine for cats. Every breed of dog is catered for, from the bulldog and great dane, down to the toy pom* and chihuahuas.
There will be some dogs and some dog talk at the Winter Show, and it will be the first real dog show ever held in the Franklin district or in Pukekohe. Some old farmer will say, "Your fancy dogs are no darned good. 1 would not give you a pin for the lot." Such a man had better come on Thursday, May 20, and see the sheepdogs work. Already entries are promised from far and near. Champion dogs will be here from all over the Island.
The man that misses the sheepdog trials will miss a treat. It is as fascinating as horse racing watching a clever clog pen his three sheep against time.
