PAPAKURA SPORTS
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING.
RECORD ATTENDANCE
The annual sports meeting, held under the auspices of the Papakuia Athletic Club, eventuated on the Railway Reserve at Papakura yesterday in ideal weather. The public took advantage of the beautiful day, and assembled in large numbers from all over the district--from Onehunga and Auckland to Mercer, and Clevedon. The attendance was estimated as being a record. The energetic secretary, Mr. L. J. Mills, and his offiicals, had elaborate arrangements complete, and everything went off without a hitch. The various events attracted a large number of competitors, and some exicting finishes were witnessed. The bicycle events attracted considerable attention, due to the fact that a 15-year-old youth, a postal messenger from Onehunga, was competing. All eyes were on the boy, and the manner in which he rode, he gained many admirers. In the mile event he kept close to the leaders, and in a dashing sprint over the last 50 yards gained the verdict by a narrow margin. In the twomile race he took the lead during the third lap, and maintained it to the finish. He rode at a steady pace throughout, and when it came to the finish he put in a sensational sprint, winning easily. The Papakura Cup Handicap of t2O was won by G. Wightman, but a protest was lodged against the winner on the grounds that Wightman did not furnish the handicapper with all of his previous performances. The committee considered the matter, but decision was deferred pending further information. The judges for the running and cycling events were Messrs E. S. Cole and D. W. Jones. The dancing events created much attraction, and were a feature of the gathering. The dancing was of a very high-class order, and it was with difficulty that the judge could declare the respective winners. Mr. McTavish officiated as judge, and his decisions met with approval. The day's proceedings were considerably enlivened through the presence of Burnand's Band, which besides rendering music for the dancing events, contributed a number of selections.
Taking everything into consideration, the sports were an unqualified success in every respect. The results are;-'-MAIDEN HANDICAP, 120 yds.-C. Stewart (scr.) 1, J. C. Paul (scr.) 2. Time, 13 4-ss.
