FARMERS' UNION
FRANKLPN EXECUTIVE.
A meeting: of the Farmers' Union, Franklin Sub-Provincial District, took place in the A. and P. Society's rooms, Pukekohe, on Friday, March 26. Present: Messrs H. 0. Mellsop (in chair). John Sehlaepfer, L: L. Morgan, F. A. Harcombe, C. Hodgkinson, W. L. West, A. L. Hull, L. L. Allen and E. Piggott. An apology was received from Mr. Frost, who was unable to be present owing to a severe cold. The secretary was authorised to write and confirm the appointment of Mr. Worsp as the Franklin delegate at the woolgrowers' conference. The Dominion Executive wrote asking if we were in favour of the embargo being lifted from the export o.f commodities. Mr. Hodgkinson moved and Mr. Harcombe seconded that the embargo be lifted. An amendment was moved by Mb. W. L. West and seconded by Mr John Sehlaepfer, "That the commandeer of meat continue until the stores are empty." A long discussion followed. Mr. Hodgkinson spoke for a free market. He considered we had good markets on the Continent of Europe as well as in the United States. Mr. L. L. Allen was in favour of a free market. He also endorsed Mr Hodgkinson's remarks, while Mr Harcombe asked, "Can any system be much worse than the system of the British Government at present." A letter was received from the provincial office, together with a report from Mr. Douglas Lysnar, M.P., dealing wilh the oenference which met to deal with the embargo on hides and restrictions in the sale of bacon. The letter reported that the embargo had been lifted from hides, and all restrictions regulating the price of bacon had been lifted, except those governing export.
