LEVEL CROSSINGS
RAILWAYS. AND COUNTY COUNCIL. The Minister for Railways (Right Hon W. F. Massey), replying to the Franklin County Council to-day, stated that warning notices were placed jat all level crossings. Also, alarm r fae!ls were being installed at the volume of traffic watfjfanted such expenditure. The Department was in sympathy with the movement for safeguards, and removed obstructions where possible. The matter of overhead bridges was one for particular consideration in each case, and, as far as local bodies '-were concerned, the Department was -•willing to confer and arrange for a reasonable apportionment of costs. Cr. Montgomerie, said the letter was unsatisfactory, ,as it was not through negligence that accidents happened. Cr. Keith said the most dangerous crossing was at Meicer, right in the centre of the township. Councillors contended that overload bridges were essential. The letter was received, and if I here was any particular level crossing that required an overhead bridge, it was agreed to bring the matte" before the Department.
