PROPOSED NEW BRIDGE

- CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, UTMOST SUPPORT ASSI/RKD. A letter from the Pukekohe Borouifli Council was received by the Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce last night, asking the chamber's in the project to secure a new overhead railway bridge at the end of King Street'. Mr. H. Dell strongly supported the now bridge project. Unfortunately, a committee, of which lie was a member, bad advocated such a bridge in the past, and also the subway! but there was then strong opposition to them. One man had said the bridge would be dangerous, and tips man had only come into Pukekohe direct once in 20 years, as he had always hoarded the train at Pokeno. That was the kind of opposition that killed the project in the first instance. Mr. Roadley emphatically supported the scheme, and it was ile tided to support the council in the matter lo the fullest possible extent. Mr. Perkins also spoke in favour. stating that he was one who, with Mr. Dell, had fought for the bridge at King Street. He agreed with Mi Dell that the very people who had opposed the scheme in the first place had now seen their error of judgment. The president said he had worked for the scheme too, but, seemingly. influence, unwarrantable signatures. etc. had defeated the project. The secretary (Mr. V. S. Roberts) said the matter was one he had spoken of to the Prime Ministor on his visit some weeks ago. lie was in business opposite the present bridge, and he had seen thingsthere that made him marvel that accidents had not occurred, especially to children. It would be against liis firm's interests that the new bridge should be built, but the in lerests of the town must be the first consideration, and on that ground a bridge from King Street was certainly desirable. Tim council's letter was unanimously approved of.
