DAIRY COY. ELECTION

VETERAN IN THE FIELD.

Much jnterest is being displayed in the first election of directors of • the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy ' Co., Ltd. In this district the names of Messrs. W. Claud Motion, Dynes Fulton and R. H. McKenzie are fairly frequently before the public. But among the candidates for the northern ward is one who may not be so well known, except by old residents, but who yet has given yeoman service in dairy company business. This veteran dairyman, Mr. W. L. West, of Waiuku, was one of the original directors of s the old New Zealand Dairy Association, on the board of which he sat for twelve years, helping to pilot the then immature organisation to the front rank of success. Mr. West was also for years a membe,r and chairman of the Otaua Drainage Board, and prominent in other spheres of public life. When a man is for many years given the confidence of electors who have money to gain or lose, it may be taken for granted that he has some solid qualities to recommend him. It can hardly be claimed that» the candidate referred to is more than ordinarily popular; he is too outspoken in his views for that. Of a cool, judicious disposition, he is possessed of the power of analysing a situation to a rather remarkable degree; very often his opinions are different from those currently held, and he does not hesitate to say so, but he is generally right in the long run. His difference of opinion, can didly stated, sometimes gives pique to the public, but sooner or late h,s excellent judgment tells, and this gains him the confidence of al! sections. In his capacity as a director of the old New Zealand Dairy Association, Mr. West was always a big 'tidier -Mid, more important still, was well known as a firm and consistent friend of suppliers generally, refusing to let their intdosts be sacrificed no matter what pressure to the contrary, was brought to bear. His past experience and extremely intimate knowledge of dairying and dairy company business entitle this ex-director's candidature to the weighty consideration of all supplier of the amalgamation
