ROAD WORKS IN MANUKAU

COUNTY ENGINEER'S REPORT. At Tuesday's meeting of the Manukau County Council, the engineer, Mr W. J. Lopdell, reported as follows on work done during February:— Mangere Riding. During the month side roads throughout this riding have been completed. The footpaths at Mangere Crossing have been cleaned up, and would be better for a coat of tar. As the plant has not yet arrived, they will have to stand over in the meantime. Several minor matters authorised have not been attendd to owing to pressure of work.

Pakuranga Riding.—General sur- ; face work is being carried out in this riding, and the water-tables are being attended to. Re Mr. Rogers' complain of storm water. This matter has been looked into by Cr. Hat- ! taway and myself, and it appears to us that it is a matter to be settled between the church authorities and Mr. Rogers. Papakura Riding.—The footpath curbing, and filling the footpath at Manurewa has been completed. Foreman Lucas has been engaged on the concrete pipe culvert on the Ranfurly Road. This job was independent of the contract, it being found necessary to remove the existing culvert to sounder ground. The contractus on this road are making good progress and. should have the work completed in about a month. Alfriston Creek.—Crs. Reid and Waters met about 20 ratepayers at the Alfriston Hall on the 19th ult. to discuss the willow question, and it was eventually decided that the riding member and engineer meet the settlers on their own section of the creek. On February 24 we made that inspection from Sinclair's property right up to Knight's. Mr. Harding, of the Public Works Department, visited the BrookbyClevedon Road, and passed same. I have prepared the plans of the Redoubt Road to the top of the first hill, about 19 chains, at an estimated cost of £250. Papatoetoe Riding.—The grader is busy in this riding on some of the side roads. Quarrying operations are still proceeding, also the manufacturing of concrete pipes. Mr. W. Leach, from the depot, has been appointed driver of the motor roller, which same has come to hand and is now at the depot. 'i'uranga Riding.—-Cr. Brownhill and myself inspected the proposed wharf site at Turanga Creek, and have to report that while there are no engineering difficulties in the way, it entirely depends on the Marine Department conditions as to the cost of the structure. As I have not had time to go into the matter with the Public Works Department I cannot make any re' at present. 1 have im-tru. ted e.rfaceman Mills, of Howiek, ui. out the water-tables on of the Manngaroa Saddle. I have also arrange.! with Mr. IJ. Hemming to cart" metal for this road. The cow briilgo has been inspected by Mr. Harding and passed. V/airoa Riding.—Nine chains of McDonald's Road has been metalled, using 13 yards to the chain. The main road has been patched up where necessary. The Mataitai Road is being attended to with a view of completing the Government grant contract. The Orere Road contracts have been at a standstill for the pa; t few weeks owing to the illness of the contractor. Several jobs in this riding have had to stand over. The Franklin County representatives meta the member and engineer of this countv at the bridge sit >, and after duly inspecting same dec ided to refer the latter back t< the council. General. Since last meeting I have purchased a rock drill, which has not yet been installed. I have also purchased a quantity of light rails from Cashmore Bros. The Austin road roller arrived during the

past week, and is now out at the depot, waiting until instructions are received re painting same. Building permits have been issued during the month of February to the value of £4350. The report was adopted.
