RAGLAN COUNTY COUNCIL
ENGNINEER'S REPORT. The engineer to the Raglan County Council (Mr J. W. Civil) reported on work done since last meeting as follows, on Wednesday:— Port Waikato Riding. Port Waikato to Tuakau Bridge Road.—Taylor and party have completed the 9 mile 30 chain to 10 mile section of road, and have made a start on the 7 50 to 8 mile peg section. Contract No. 416.—Luckens and Godfrey did not make much progress with their contract up to the end of February, but now have secured 14 men, and are doing well. Timber for all bridges and culverts on the 8, 9, 10 and 11 and 12 mile sections ha? been ordered, and a portion delivered at Mercer.
Some 50 pipes have been landed at Halimore's landing, and arrangement made for the laying of four culverts between the bridge and Mr. Lawson's. Owen's Road Grant.—With the exception of placing three pipe culverts this work has been completed ' Oae*hero Riding. to Watson's Gate Grant, £2OOO. -1 expect to leceive authority proceed with this work withif-the next week. 11amilton's Deviation- -Metalling. J. Singlatott'* contract has been cancelled oWmg to his not starting to the ,sf>«cifi«a time, and the contract let io McFaydeJi and party. • Hunter's Deviation. —J. York has completed thl# work. Repairs have b«en carried out on various roads . # Pukekawa Riding. Pukekawa to Bregmen's Landing Road.—Engineering survey has been made of one and a-half miles of this road, and D. Torpey and party have made a start on same. Also a contract for widening some 20 chains of steep cutting has been let to Thompson and Taumata. One hundred and fifty 9in pipes have been landed at the Punga Punga Landing, and repairs carried out on various roads. Whangape Riding. Tuakau Bridge to Waingaro Road. —Contractors Marston, Owen and Kernohan have completed breaking metal at Awaroa Landing and Sorboy's quarries, and contract let to J. Madill for carting some 700 cubicyards of metal on to the road. The engineering and survey of some one mile 58 chains of road has been made for widening and straightening from the junctions of Sorboy's and Bothwell Road to the junction of the Tikot'iko, past Sorboy's residence. Surface work has been carried out between the junction of Hetherington's and McLeod's Road. Awaroa Landing Wharf. —The timber has been ordered for the improvements in regard to the deepening of the water at the wharf. Repairs have been carried out on various roads. Pukemiro Riding. Rotowaro to Waikokowai R.oad Grant, £soo—Plans and specifications have been made and forwarded to the Mines Department for approval, and I expect the authority at an early date. „ . Dingle's Road Grant.—Engineering survey of this work has been made, plans and specifications prepared and forwarded to the Public Works Department for approval. Repairs have been carried out on various roads with road plant. Harbour. Raglan Wharf.—The contractor has placed all the low wallings and finished the bracing of piles, so that now the work is above the tide level, he should make good progress. There is still a fair amount of work in the superstructure to complete. General. 1 find that unless the council raises the wages .above what is being paid now. I will lose a number of the men I have working, and there will be no chance of replacing them at the wages offered. Surfacemen's Wages. The engineer was authorised tr pay up to 14s per day for labour. The report was adopted.
