TUAKAU TOWN BOARD
SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting of the Tuakau Town Board was held last evening, .vhen there were present: Messrs. Dynes Fulton "(chairman), J. .Jff. Mungall, B. G. Geraghty, Jas. Pirret, n,:is r,; nch, Geo. S. Lapwood, \V. Barnabv. and the clerk (Mr. A. 11. Tapper). . / Tenders. The meeting was Convened for the purpose of receiving tenders for the completion of George Street works. No tenders were received.—The chairman remarked that contractors were rather shy about tendering nowadays, due to the high price of horse feed, materials, labour, and the high cost of living. They made, little or nothing out of the contracts when completed. He suggested that as the board had failed to receive tendera - for the. work, that it be done by dav labour. ,: J
Mr. Mungall thought that the time for receivings tenders had better be extended, ind he moved that the time for receiving tenders be extended until February 24th at 6 . p.m., and that a meeting of the board be held on February 26 to open tenders. Mr. Fulton considered that if the work was delayed now it would mean j that the work would be held up during the winter. He thought they, should get on with the wortr "\ advantage of the summer weatker. He moved as an amendment that the engineer be instructed to put the work of George Street in hand forthwith, and that he advertise for the necessary number of men to do the job.
Mr. Mungall drew the chairman's attention to the fact that there was a infinite on the to the effect that work over a certa6i«sum had to be done by contract.
Mr. Fulton agreed, contended that the r board had abided by its decision. It had called for, but haS failed to receive, tenders. Therefore he contended there was no other alternative but to do the work by day labour. *
Mr. Barnaby seconded, and before being put, the amendment was caarried, the chairman, Messrs. Barnaby, Finch and Lapwood vising fu the tU-
normative, amOfegsrs. Mungall, Geraghty in the negative.
Bollard Road.
The Works Committee did not meet for the purpose of inspecting Bollard Road, and it was decided, in view of the failure to obtain tenders for George Street, to leave the matte* - of the above road in abeyance in the meantime.- The board to concentrate its energies on George Street. Gubb's Entrance. The matter of Gubb's ept?an?£ was again considered, Mr. W. Gubb waiting on the board with a request that the board provide-him with two entrants to his property in George St, in iieu of one taken away when the portion of the street past his property was being regraded and formed. Mr. Gubb said it would be cheaper to the board to make two entrances in place of the one it had decided on. Full particulars of the case have appeared in these columns. Mr. Fulton said the board was always willing to provide a reasonable entrance, but he was not in favour of recommending two entrances, one at the lower end,, and a smal ! entrance in the centre. He and other members of the board were always in favour of replacing an entrance taken away through regrading of ? street. After a little discussion on lines, as previously reported, the chairman moved that the board meet the engineer and Mr. Gubb at the property on Monday, at 9.30 a.m. Mr. Lapwood seconded, and the motion was carried.
