FRANKLIN FARMERS' COAUCTIONEERING COY. LTD.
PURCHASE OF BUILDINO SITE.
During the last few days several valuable s ctions in and adjacent to King Street have been acquired by the Franklin Farmers' Auctioneering Company. This newly-formed company in the course of a very .short space of time intends to erect up-to date and elaborate premises in King Street, where they will conduct their auctioneering, wholesale, and wood and coal business. With this object in view, the company acquired the vacant section next to Mr. Keating's bakery, and it is here that the store and mart will be built:. When the structure is completed, and business settles down, the company have made preparations to avoid carts having to go in and return the same way. So as to make a complete right of way from the entrance to the property from King Street, they have acquired the residence of Mrs. King in Edinburgh Street. It is not proposed to touch the residence at all, but to make merely a right of v/ay. The house will be owned by the company, but will be let or leased, as th case may be. In a very few years the managing director of the company, Mr. J. T. Stembridge, expects the business to grow, and that he company will be handling all classes of machinery. It is a cumbersome undertaking to have to lift machinery up stairs. To obviate this, the property occupied by Misses Ram say has been acquired also, and this will be the machinery depot. The prices paid were not mntioned, but we understand they were satisfactory to both parties.
The returning officer for th« Franklin Licensing District (Mr. J. Patterson), in an announcement in this issue, calls for nominations for members of the Franklin Licensing Committee. Nominations must be to hand by the 28th Inst. The ratepayers of Paeroa have carried polls to raise loans for dramage and sewerage, roading and footpaths, and domain improvements, the total being £55,000. How many more places are going to get on the money market ahead of Pukekohe? In view of the present agitation to urge upon the Government to increase the "tote" permits, Rev. J. F. Malrtin will deliver a sermon, entitled "Gambling," at the Methodist Church on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The odious open pans system for the removal of nightsoil in the Borough of Pukekohe was the subject of discussion at Wednesday night's meeting of the council. Cr. Patterson condemned the method, and proposed that a report be submitted on the covered pan system.—Carried unanimously.
A sitting of the Police Court was held on Monday before Messrs. C. K. Lawrie and F. Perkins, J.P', when Geo. Roland Feek, who was arrested on Saturday night by Constable Wolfendale, was charged with being found by night, without lawful excuse, on the dwelling premises of Mrs. J. Feek. Defendant, who pleaded guilty, said he went there on a misunderstanding. He was convicted and discharged. Feek was also charged with a breach of his prohibition order. On this count he was remanded to appear at Pukekqh* on Thursday, February 19. There is a queer mixture of rates obtaining in the Borough of Pukekohe,. varying according to whether a given property is in the area loaded with the cost of the fire brigade, water, and roading loans. Thus in the old Town Board area, the area is 3d in the £1 on the capital value. Outside the old board area the general rate is plus 1-6 hospital rate. Then there are no less than eight special rating areas, contributions varying from 1-17 to 1-3 of a penny; making the total something between 2d and 3d, according to the number and amount of special rates applicable. The present ratepayers have the comforting knowledge that if they live long enough they will eventually be free of all these special rates. If they die-well, they will then be free of both special and general rates.
