LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS

A meeting of the Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce will be held tomorrow night.

The Buckland Rabbit Committee notify that Thursday has been fixed for laying poison. The touring manager of Messrs. Wirth Bros' circus (Mr. G. L. Petersen) states that the circus will visit Pukekohe on Thursday, March 11.

Messrs. Cooper and Curd have purchased the coachbuilding and blacksmithing business of Messrs. Hair and Elmsly, Waiuku, and will be taking possession in the near future. Considerable improvements are being made in Hall Street, from Roulston's corner down past the Masonic Lodge. The road is beng improved in grade; both foothpaths trimmed, and the Masonic Hall side has been shelled.

"Mickey" (Mabel Normand) will be at the Premier Hall to-nght. Come and see her, and bring the kiddies. They will enjoy "Mickey" as well as the adults. "Stolen Orders," the big eight-reel spy story, is being shown to-morrow (Wednesday) evening, at ordinary picture prices.

The chairman of the Tuakau School Committee has received word that an additional sum has been granted to erect the new school in brick. A three-roomed building is to be erected, and the architect has been requested to push on the work as speedily as possible. A school building worthy of the district will now be erected, and the committee have reason to feel satisfied that they pressed for a brick instead of a wooden building. In reference to our report of Mr S. Biddel's remarks about the cost of roads, and the methods adopted, at the Franklin County Council meeting on Thursday, Mr. Biddel states that he mentioned Waimate County as paying total rates of l%d, Aka Aka something over l l 4d, and that if good roads, suitable for modern motor traffic could be provded for 1 3-4 d it would be sound business. Incidentally, it is a difficult matter to hear correctly in the council chambers. The floor has no covering, and the slightest movement causes chairs to creak. Also, unless the speech is in a low voice, the sound rebounds, making it difficult to catch the words.
