DISTRICT NEWS.

i PAPATOETOE. SPORTS MEETING. A very successful sports meeting, in aid of the Papatoetoe and Last Tamaki Boys' Brass Band, was Hold in the school grounds on Tuesday, February 3. There was a large gathering of residents of the two districts, and some very exciting K.cing eventuated, reflecting great credit on the hanmcapper, Mr. Whitten. 'ihe judges were Messrs. McDonald aud Knight. The prizes were many and varied. A guessing competition that was novel and interesting, and in which almost every man on the ground entered for, was guessing the distance between two• pegs, competitors being allowed to step out the distance before making their guess. The winner was Mr. John Finlay, who guessed 29yds, the a tual measurement being 29yds lin. Another competition was guessing the weight of a rooster, Vnd the case in which it was enclosed. The nctual weight was 18 3-41bs. Messrs. McMehan and Whitten tie*d with 18%lbs f . A large number of races were run, the winners being:—

Girls Under Eight.—Eileen White 1, Audrey Oliver 2. Girls Over Eight and Under Ten.— Olive Philpot 1, Joyce Wyatt 2. Boys Under Eight.—Frank rial! 1, Basil Kemp 2.

Crawford 2. , The last race was for members of the band, each competitor having to run 50yds, pick up his own instrument BS|d play up and down the scale, replace his instrument and r.ve back to point, points oeing given for music as well as speed. The winner was E. Kerr, with, four points music. Time 21sec, Hope Johnson, 2nd, with two points music. Time 20sec.

The band played several selections, after which they gave three rousing cheers for the ladies, also for Mr. Arthur Hall and Mr. Whitten, . who "Bb'tli Trojans to mike the afternoon enjoyable for the visitors.

It is intended to make the band sports an annual institution, and, judging by the interest tak'en in the band* it will command an evev-in-creasing attendance. >.■ *-

JOWN BOARD MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the )'apatoetoe Town Board was held on Tuesday, February 3, when there_ we e present Messrs. J. Watson (chairman), J. Bryant, S. McCullough, A. U. Timewell, J. Death, A. Hall, H. C. Ernest' (clerk).

Mr. Bryant reported that, as requested, he had approached several local contractors in connection with the forming and kerbing the 11;:proach to the station. In response tenders were given by Messrs. Bumside Bros. ancl P. Peaywff. Mr.. Peath Shat Burnside Bros' tender be accepted.—Seconded by Mr. Hall and carried. Mr. Watson reported that he hid interviewed Mr. Stanton, solicitor, and that he was drafting out a set of by-laws for the Town Board, and requested that the board inform him if they desired any special clauses to be included. Plans were submitted from Messrs. Pegler and McGarry for the subdivision of their properties. The plans were left in the hands of the Building Committee to report. Re sanitary service.—After considerable discussion, the board instructed the secretary to write to the Manurewa Town Board asking them to call a meeting of representatives from the Manurewa, Papakura, ind Papatoetoe Town Boards with the purpose of promoting a combined sanitary scheme. Accounts were passed for payment amounting to £49 14s.
