DISTRICT NEWS.
PAERATA. PICNIC AND SOCIAL. January 29,1920, will be a day long to be remembered by the residents and children of Paerata. The Social Committee had for the last three weeks been working strenuously organising a picnic, to be followed by a social and dance, for the benefit of the children and residents of the district. The weather conditions were all that could be desired, and the grounds selected were Ideal (permission being kindly granted by Mr. D. Jamleson). See-saws and swings were erected under the trees for the children, who were also profusely presented with toys and sweets. There was a lengthy children's sports programme, in the hands of Messrs. A. Ross and W. Parkinson. The adult members present were also well catered for in the athletic line, under the management of Messrs. D. Jamieson (starter), C. Bridge (handicapper), W. Alderton (secretary), and H. McGaffan (chairman of committee). Messrs. J. Schlaepfer, junr, and J. Mitchell officiated as judges. In the evening the social and dance was well patronised, the goods shed accommodation being. overtaxed. However, everybody present thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
One of the main features during the evening was the presentation of prizes won during the afternoon. The committee deserve great credit for the manner in which everything was arranged, and it is to be hoped that the residents will patronise their efforts to liven up the welfare of the district.
