OHEWHERO ATHLETIC CLUB

SPORTS HEETINB. SUCCESS. Anniversary Day, January 29, of ffSuAuekland Province, will remain fcegn in the minds of those who attended -the sports meeting held at Onewhero under the auspices of the Onewhero Athletic Club. It is just on five years since the annual sports meeting was abandoned, owing: to the great European conflict. With the cessation of hostilities, tthe club decided to again hold the meetings annually, and the first meeting took place i yesterday after the enforced lapse. Ideal weather prevailed; in fact, the rays of Old Sol struck Mother Earth with such force that at times the heat was unbearable.' All roads led to Mr. John Cathcart's paddock (which was kindly lent for the occasion, and which was an excellent spot), and some time before midday people began to stream In from far and near. Pukekawa, Tuakau, Pukekohe, Buckland and Kohanga people were present in large numbers, and early in the afternoon there was evidence of a record attendance. •

The officials had everything complete, matters running exceptionally smoothly, and everything augurs well for the success of future meetings.

The energetic secretary, Mr. E. Jas. Attewell, did all in his power to make the gathering a uccess, and it is gratifying to chronicle his object was achieved. ' The running events attracted only small fields. In the Onewhero Cup and* half-mile events, the winner won as. he liked, the handicap being too great for the back-mark men. The finish of the quarter-mile event was as godd as anyone wished to see, Parker, of Buckland, winning by a very narrow margin. There were large entries for the horse events, and these poved more than satisfactory. A natives named H. Puaha, annexed most of the eveMs on a grey'equine. He showed gnat ability as a "knight of the pigskin." A social was held in the evening, and was largely attended, it being an unqualified success The results are as follows: Maiden Handicap (120 yds).—P. Wilson (scr.) 1; L. Cathcart (2yds) 2.
