ELECTION BALLADS.
[Published by Arrangement.]
No. 1. Although I'll not confess to writing Piggott's manifesto, Tet I'm willing to endorse it and assist it all I can ; For I want to " out" Bill Massey, and Joe Ward's just as unci assy, So I'm breaking into poetry to help our Labour man.
In a word, the Labour Party is one mass of simple, hearty, Sound, unselfish, honest statesmen, never beats about the woods, Never sails under false colours, or makes use of wire-pullers, But makes a break directly for the People's good—or goods. For people who have oapital we do not care a rap at all, 'Twill be ours to spend on baccy, grab, and lots of beer,—my hat! It's a lucky thing that Piggott should chance to rhyme with spigot, (It also rhymes with bigot, but you roust not mention that.)
Though the farmer has decried us, and the Fat Han may deride us, They'll soon be jolly sorry that they've talked such blooming rot; It will act as a corrective when we bring in our objective And grab the land, tka ships, the shop', and everything they've got.
Though the newspapers mendacious with their arguments fallacious Print sickening les about us and slanders by the score, Yet, when by Labour edited their statements will be credited, As, see the " Maori Worker," "Truth," and half-a-dozen more.
They now charge us with disloyalty, and say we'd pull down ro alty; They shriek we'd shirk our mili'ary duties one and all; Well, although we know they're vermin, yet we rather have the German Than be governed any longer by a " Prussian Cabal."
When poor old " Plain Bill Massey," now quite wom out and f asset And Joey Ward are " outed," with their programmes sinister, The little town of Buckland will be known as our "Good Luck Land " For having sent us Piggott, our next Prime Minister. So now, good folk, remember the seventeenth of December, And all your votes for Labour in the ballot boxes drop: We'll have tons of paper money, and the land with milk and honey Will be simply over-flowing, when Labour gets on top.
