PUKEKOHE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

A meeting of the above was hold in the Borough Council Chambers on Monday night, the President (Mr R. F. "Vebster) occupying the chair. SUKDAY EXPRESS Mr F. Perkins, strongly urged that the Railway Department should be asked to allow the stopping of the express trains, from Auckland, at Pukekohe on Sundays, as obtained before the war. Mr Roadley suggested that permission be given to stop for through passengers, to Wellington. Mr Perkins added that there was an enormous district draining from Waiuku, Tuakau, Onewhero and other places, and the town was therefore justified in having the old conditions resumed.—Carried. 'jKE-vr south roai>. The old, old tronble, the lack of a decent road through from Auckland to Hamilton was brought up by Mr F. Perkins. "It is a disgrace to the province" said Mr Perkins," "that there is no good road on either side of Pukekohe, leading to the city of Auckland and the town of Hamilton." Mr Tabor remarked that the railway restrictions had done more for the" road proposal than anything else. People in Auckland were "using bad language" about it, ani no doubt the investigations that were now going on would come to fruition. REPATBIATION. The president (MrR. F. Webster} said he had been asked that the Chamber should appoint a member of the proposed Repatriation Com mittee in Pukekohe. Mr Perkins said there was need of a local committee, as in many instsnees money was most unwisely distributed. Local advice was very necessary. Mr G. Armstrong proposed Mr Webster as representative, stating that the fine work Mr Webster had done during the years of the- war marked him as the most fitting member. Mr Perkins seconded the matter, which was carried unanimously. Replying, Mr Webster said his sympathies had been with the soldiers all through, nevertheless each case would be fairly considered by him on its merits, and the public interests safeguarded as far as he was able. FIRE ISRIGADE EQUIPMENT. Mr Webster described the expeditious method of coupling hose in use by the Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering Company, Auckland, in comparison with which the Public method was'iuite out of date. He hoped the Borough Council would examine the system, with a view to its adoption in Pukekohe. INSURANCE RATES. Mr Perkins considered it "absolutely scandalous" that the rates for firo insurance in Pukekohe should be so high, seeing; that the town had a fire brigade and an adequate water supply. Mr Armstrong said thero was a romit to como before the Municipal Conference ; urging that the various towns should be placed in grades, according to the facilities provided for fire-fighting. The Mayor (Mr C K. Lawrie), would bo supporting this remit. 'IMIONE service. On the motion of the secretary (Mr V. S. Roberts) seconded by Mr T. E McMillan, it was decided that a man be engaged to secure signatures for the extension of the 'phono service for two hours on Sunday, one hour in the morning and one in the afternoon, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., and 5 p.m to r> p m. SPEEH OF MOTORS It was suggested that a resolution should be forwarded to the Borough Council, urging that the speed of motor vehicles through the main street should bo reduced, as the rata indulged in at present was decidely dangerous - Carried. Mr Roadley commented that whatever resolutions were passed in Pukekohe they were never carried out Mr Armstrong; said special resolutions were now being put through, empowering the police to take action. 1 —Resolution carried. NEW MEMliElts The following neve members were enrolled :-Messrs Cooper, H. Curd, J. Heyworth, Wild, 0. Wharf, W. King and fl. F Knight. METKJIS. Mr Civil referred to the defective meters. Mr \V. Hurleehid the mete's wore affected with "galloping consumption." He had throe lights, costing 10s a week each.—Nothing definite registered.
