CLEVEDON
The Peace Day was commemorated in Clevedon on the 19th by the holding of a patriotic ceremony and musical programme in the Public Hall. 'The hall was "camouflaged" internally with flags and evergreens, and a marquee was erected in the grounds for afternoon tea. The children from the schools in the district, including a full muster from Ardmore, assembled at one o'clock, and were paraded by the Clevedon School, from whence they marched —to the strains of the pipes—into the hall and on to the stage. After singing the national anthem, Mr. A. D. Bell made a short speech suitable to the occasion, and then read the Peace Proclamation, being followed up by patriotic songs by the massed schools. The children then took their seats in the body of the hall, and the musical programme was gone through, the singers being Mrs. Mellsop, Miss M. Dow, Messrs. A. D. Bell, C. C. Munro, S. G. S. Branson, Furley, Routledge, J. A. Gandy. Other items were the Highland fling, and a sword dance given by Masters Cameron and Miss Blake, the pipes being played by Mr. C. Cameron; Pianoforte Duet by Mrs. Dennis and Miss Colquhoun; Instrumental Item by Mrs. Dennis' orchestra; Chorus by the Ardmore Schoolchildren ; and an exhibition of boxing by various small boys of the Clevedon School. The latter caused much amusement, as did Mr. Branson's coon songs —he being in costume. Near the conclusion of the programme the tea was announced, and the children were taken out to be catered for first, being supplied with bags of lollies after the tea. The whole afternoon was a great success, everyone entering into the spirit of the day, the hall being packed to overflowing, and the audience loudly applauding each item.
