The Times. PUBLISHED ON TUESDAY AND FRIDAY AFTERNOONS.

FRIDAY, JULY 11, 1919 PUKEKOHE PEACE CELEBRATIONS.

"We, nolhinu externum, nor let nom. •tuuht tn malvx,"

The programme of the Pukekohe Peace Celebrations is published in another column of this issue. On the whole, the decisions are satisfactory, consideriug the delay and doubt due to the vacillating attitude of the Cabinet in regard to subsidies. There is one feature, however, which will create a good deal of adverse critici/m, and that is holding of a banquet on Saturday night, the 19th, to men only, returned soldiers being entitled to invite one male friend. We do not think this course shews either courtesy or chivalry towards the women who have so nobly done their part, and suffered awful suspense and anxiety during the war, to say nothing of those who are bereaved. Moreover, many of the ex-soldiers will not fuel greatly at ease at a banquet of the '' smoke concert " order, while their wives, mothers, ana other relatives and friends have to stay at home awaiting their men folks' return that night. Saturday is a day for all, and we think that the Celebrations Committee would have been well advised to have arranged for a public dinner to be given to the soldiers and exsoldiers, at which the public, male and female, eonld have been present. The community in general would sureK assist in providing such a function, which, after all, need not be expensive. After that, a dance -or a '' smoke eoncert," if desired—could be held. At anyrate, the present arrangement, in the opinion of many people, constitutes a blot on the programme as a whole, and we trust that tin- Committee will see
