From F.U, Conference. (Own Reporter.) "There are 3,784 provincial members of the Union in the Auckland province, whereas there are 120,000 to 121,000 eligibles," said the President (Mr J. Boddie), on Wednesday. : 'So long as you will not pay subscriptions, so long will our organization be weak."
After making use of the saying "casting pearls before swine." a prominent speaker, amid roars of laughter, hastened to explain that he did not inean that the farmers were swine.
" The branch secretaries are doing good work, but if the farmers do not exhibit a little enthusiasm, then the experience of these secretaries will be similar to my own—that is, very disappointing."—The President.
" A bootblack pays 26s a year to his Union; so, surely a farmer can pay £l."—Mr Lysnar. "Nothing but my Scotch perseverance has kept me from throwing up the whole thing many a time after I have left my warm fireside, and travelled weary miles on a wet night to a branch meeting, only to find that there were just two or three, besides myself, who turned up."—The President.
"A man owning merely a few fruit trees and a garden should not be expected to pay as large a subscription as one owning thousands of pounds' worth of property." A small cockie. "The success of the whole business is based on this old, old question of the payment of subscriptions. If these are not forthcoming, then this (or any other) Executive can plan and scheme as much as they like, but their efforts will ill be in vain.''—Mr Wynyard.
