STRAY CATTLE.
Public Menace. Scarcely a meeting of a local body passes without a complaint is received from someone drawing attention to the number of cattle straying on the roads or streets, as the case may be. For some weeks, or even months past, the number of cattle using the " long paddock" particularly at night, in the Boiough of Pukekohe, has been causing quite a number of residents intolerable annoyance by the numerous animals allowed to "go at large" on the streets of the Borough, 'l'he fact of cattle straying on the streets makes it dangerous for anyone to proceed out during the evenings, and furthermore, residents do not grow beautiful hedges for fodder for cattle. A great deal of damage is caused in this respect and also if a gate happens to be accidently left open, something is bound to find the " open door " and sure enough " in they stroll." Harrington Avenue, among the many other places, has been tho '■ accommodation paddock " for many months. For some time past the animals have performed the " disappearing trick " from the Avenue, and they now appear to be in Dr. Wake's locality, as a complaint was received from him by the Borough Council. Councillors contended that the ranger was not doing his duty, and it was decided to acquaint him with the complaints received and point out that if he does not do his duty the alternative will be enforced.
All sorts of wiles are indulged in to hoodwink the ranger. For instance, lie may visit one end of the town and bo " spotted." A friend may put a friend at the other end of the town " wise." By the timely use of the 'phone, the ranger is bamboozled on nearly every occasion.
