OTAHUHU.

COUNCIL MEETING The usual fortnightly meeting of theOtthuhu Borough Council was held l.tsc evening (Thursday) Iu the ab-er.cn of the Mayor the deputy Mavoi {Mr H J Hall) presided, and the following Councillors wore present, Messrs Stringer, F. L Bradley, F. F. Clements, K. Tod I, A. Cummings and J Wilson. An application was received from Mrs Osman, of Station Koad for connection with sewerage to her new house. A 3imilar application was received from Mr A Trenwith for the Council to make the customary entrance to his new residence in Mangere Koad. Both matters were referred to the Works Committee. A letter was read from the Department of Internal Affairs intimating thit the Peace celebrations would take place on the days of Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, the fortnight following the receipt of the signing of the Peace terms. A petition was presented from a number of residents diawing attention to the insanitary condition of a building ouce occupied as police headquarters in Great 8 »uth Road The lUerk pointed tut that the Government had decided to demolish the building. For the position of pumping eugineer the Council received twenty applications After careful consideration the number for final selection was reduced to three. Ihe find choice fell upon Mr C. Bateman, of Northcute.

The report from the Works com mittee was read and adopted. The committee suggested that the Council as a whole pay a vi>it of inspection over the district to enable Councillors to arrive at a conclusion as what roads are in need of repair. It was also thought advisable for the Finance committee to intimate to the Coun il the am mat of money available fur expenditure. It was resolved to fix Saturday, the 31st mat. as the date of inspection. Cr Todd wanted to know if the Works' committee would meet and report its programme of work to be done for the year. If so he suggested that the works left undone during the past year take priority of any work contemplated. Cr Andrew offered the use of his car to take Councillors round the district for the inspection. The report of the pumping engineer was read and adopted. Cr. Wilson moved that the Water and A'orks committee institute an inquiry into the pumping capacity of itie plant per hour. Cr Cummings seconded the motion and it was carieJ.

Cr Cuaimiogß spoke in support of notice of motion, of which he gave uotice at the previous meeting in regard to what he considered an injustice in the half-yearly water charges.
