MERCER.

MERCER TOWN BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Mercer Town Board was held on Friday of last week. Present—Messrs J. T. Gillibrand (Chairman}, M. Gallery, H. 8. Valentine, J. Sellwood, with the Clerk (Mr A. fl. Taplay.) The question of a caretaker for the Sublic hall was considered, and after eliberation Mr J. T. Crowhurst was appointed to the position. The matter of a memorial in memory of soldiers who had made the supreme sacrifice in the fight for justice, right, and liberty, was introduced, and eventually, after several members expressing the opinion that something should be done, it was agreed to formulate and assist a scheme to erect such a memorial. It is proposed that such memorial take the form of a cairn, to be erected on that triangular piece of land facing Mr Bates' boarding-house. It is to be in rough rock and cement, surmounted by a town light, witb solid brass or bronze tablets let into the rock, and bearing the names of men who have made the supreme sacrifice, and of men who had left the Mercer district. A subscription list for funds to erect the monument is in circulation, and donations are solicited. In the event of the voluntary donations being inadequate, the balance will be raised by means of concerts and other functions. Accounts amounting to £24 were approved and passed for payment. The usual monthly meeting of the Waikato Biver Board, to have been held at Mercer on Saturday last, lapsed for want of a quorum. The meeting will take place next Saturday, April 12ih.
