DISTRICT NEWS.

TUAKAU. TUAKAU TOWN BOARD (To thi Editor) Sib,—My attention has been drawn to very hostile reports appearing in yoor columns after meetings of the Board on occasions in which your reporter has not been present. Id your issue of March 11th, you hare a report wtoioh is absolutely incoitect. The same reads "In accordance with notice of motion, the Chairman moved that the minutes of the citizens' committee meeting, hold on November 14th with regard to the influenza epidemic, and appearing on the Board's minute book, be deleted. - Mr Mangali seconded, and the motion was carried, Mr Mtingall voting against.—The matter created considerable) discussion, and Mr Mungall's action was adversely commented on by members." No one except the Chairman spoke on the motion whieh I seconded pro forma; but I said that I did not see what object could be gained by taking the record off the minute book. I absolutely deny that I was adversely commented on by members of the Board and I challenge' the person who gave you the information to prove that adverse comment was made by members in regard to my action as stated in your report.— Yours etc. J. M. MUNGALL. Tunkau. " T The induction and ordination of tlie Rev. W. J. Nichol, who has been appointed to the charge of 8t Stephen's (Presbyterian) Church, Tunkau, took place on Thursday evening last, the Moderator for the district, the Bev. S Nixon, of Pukekohe officiating, and the Rsva. J. logs (Parnell), W. McDonald (Epsom), and W. J Youngson (Edendale), also being prefeut. The service prior to the ceremony was conducted 'by the Rev Youngson, who preached an appropriate sermon. Subsequent to the ceremony, a social took place, during the course of which addresses of weloome to the Rev. and Mrs Nichol were given by My J. H. During an interval ir the proceedings in connection with the welcome given at Tuakau on Thursday last to the newly-appointed Presbyterian Minister, the Rev. W J. Nichol, the clerk to the Session, Mr J H. McFarland, on behalf of the session, presented the Rev. 8. Nixon, of Pukekohe, with a travelling-rug in recognition of his action in filling the vacancy pending the Rev. Nichol's arrival as successor to the Kev. Messrs Dynes Fulton, V. J. Fitz patrick, aid W H. NorthmOre visited Auckland on Wednesday last for the purpose of obtaining information with regard to the erection at Tuakau of some suitable memorial in honour of Tuakau soldiers who had made the supreme sacrifice in upholding the traditions of the British Empire. The information gathered will, in due course, be submitted to a meeting of the committee set up to consider what form the monument should take.

The work in connection with George street is well in hand. A commencement has been made in taking up the road, preparatory to laying it down with Restar mae adam from the railway station to Mr Pirret's comer. As soon t»s this portion of the street is oompleted, the Town Board intends to proceed with the re grading and formation work as far as the Board's boundary at Collins' orchard, Directly the overhead bridge question is settled the re-grading and formation of Harrisville road will be proceeded with.

For eome time past a petition has been in circulation in Tuakau with a view to haviog Messrs J M. Mungall md E T Frost nominated as Justices •>f the Peace. Up to the present we understand that there are nearly 200 on the petition. General regret is felt at Tuakau >t th- approaching departure of Mr md Mrs W. Reid Clarke, who have i'npo*ed of their property at liarrisvill», arid are removing to the Manure w.i district. Mr Reid Clarke has bne»i closely identified with local nffnin. and acted as secretary of the H'lrrixvillM school committee, whilst Vlrs Ifoid Olttrk k'iH takfn an Hctive j.j»rt in affair*, besidex tilling 'he ~osirion of organist at the Anglican tlhurnh,

Among the list of successful candidates at the recent University and

Scholarship examinations appear the names of Malcolm Cruickshank and Laura Leaman, of Tuakau. Among the soldiers who recently retnrned to New Zealand by the Port Melbourne were Privates 8. Block, W. McKee, and L. Ruffles, of Tuakau. At the meeting of the Raglan Licensing Committee, held in the Ngaruawahia Court-house on Thursday last, a complaint was lodged by the police against the state of the Tuakau Hotel. The building, it I was suggested, required painting and renovating. Senior-Sergt.
