WAIPIPI
SCHOOL PICNIC On January 23rd the school-chil-dren's annual picnic took place in Mr G. Frear's paddock, Wharf road, The weather looked very threatening iu the early morning, but it cleared up about 11 a.m, and a nice cool day was experienced. During the afternoon a large crowd was present, the outlying districts being weil represented. A committee consisting of Messrs J. A. Short, A. Jones, W. Watson, G. Frear, H. and K. B Furniss, and M. Keogh, with the help of other residents and visitors, arranged and carried out a really good programme of sports A good number of events were got through, including: foot races, tugs of war, sheaf pitching, stepping competition, lolly scrambles, etc. Ihree cheers for Mr Frear, for lending his paddock, brought the proceedings to a close In the evening a social was held in the sch 01, and was well attended, dancing being kept up until 2.3 ft a.m. f
A large acreage of hay has beefc cut in the Waipipi district, and in $ good many cases there are two an| three stacks on farms, so that with turnips, etc., cattle ought to be the lucky side in the winter andspring. There are also some very' good oat crops, the most of which are now cut or shortly will be Potatoes are a vast improvement on,, former years, but some crops rWo now showing a slight toucWf the blight, although not to affect the size of Turnips do not appearJS'bave done any too well, and qfr' patchy. Maize should afford „a good yield; whilst millet, which has been tried this season on soriie farms, is between three and ftttfr feet high in its green state Th# T Vhowery and warm weather of late has brought pumpkins and other crops along a good bit.
