SOLDIERS RETURNING
(To the Editor.) Sir,—ln reference to the letter appearing in your issue of January 2*l at, remarks have been made where* by it ia suggested that t am at fault in failing to extend a welcome to out gallant boys who are returning home after so ably fighting for us, and upholding the British Empire. I desire therefore to explain that the Mayor is chairman and Mr Barter is deputy chairman of the soldiers' reception committee, I believe that I am a member of the committee, but we have not been called together for many months. I doubt if we had a meeting last year, and therefore t cannot accepWesponsibility for not carrying out the function of the above organisation. I have on frequent occasions filled the breach in presiding over functions when our heroes were going away and returning, but I have long since arrived at the conclusion that it should be part of the Mavoral duties to attend to such matters. We will have many of our brave " boys " returning very soon, and it is up to us to extend to them a public welcome, and if _ the Mayor will take the lead I will be only too pleased to assist him if he considers my services of any value.—Yours etc, 0. K. LA.WBIE Pukekohe.
