WATER PUMI' The condition of the pump at the pumping station was brought under the Council's notice by Cr A B. Barter who stated that the Engineer was experiencing considerable difficulty with it. Owing to the great work, which the pump was called on to do in pumping water to the Hill Reservoir, it was continually out of reuair. Cr Barter pointed out that if the pump ever broke down it would bo a serious matter in the event of an outbreak of fire occurring. The Engineer (Mr W. Wyatt btated that too much was required of the pump anl what was wanted was a smaller one to relieve the old pump, which had been installed seven years ago. To do the necessary work it had to continue running up to concert pitch. The question of procuring a suitable pump was left in the hands of the Works Committee. WELLINGTON STKEET A potiti ion signed by 1-1 ratepayers advocating the necessity for begin-

uing the covering of Wellingtonstreet from Harris Street to the Cemetery with scoria was presented It pointed out that the state of the street after rain made passage for vehicular traffic almost impossible. * It was decided to reply that owing to its present financial position the Council could not do the work but as soon as fresh financial arrangements were- made the matter would be considered. INSANITARY DWELLINGS The existance of the insanitary buildings in the borough was brought up by Cr Stembridge who instanced a case of a house near the cemetery, which he stated was absolutely unfit for human habitation, and an eyesore to the neighbouring community. It was absolutely scandalous, he continued, to ask people to go and live in such a place. The Building Inspector was instructed to inspect the place and to report to the Mayor as to the condition of the dwelling.
