IN MEMORY OF HEROES

Proposed Memorial The matter of erecting some suitable memorial in memory of the many Pukekohe soldiers who had made the supreme sacrifice on the battlefield in fighting for right, justice, and liberty, against might, was introduced at the meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council on Wednesday evening last. For some time past this question has cropped up, but was deferred until after the conclusion of the war. Mow th it hostilities had ceased, Cr Bilkey thought the time opportune to reintroduce the subject. He was strongly of the opinion that eome permanent memorial should be erected in recognition of the boys who had spilled their blood in upholding the tradi tions of the Empire to which they belonged. He suggested the erection of a memorial on the recreation ground, and added that it would be the means of beautifying the grounds and attracting more attention thereto than hitherto had been the case He would like the memorial to be representative of the Borough and County Councils, and he was of opinion the County Council would not hesitate in co-operating with the Borough. Besides including the names of soldiers who had fallen on the field of battle he would like to see included the names of soldiers who had returned from the fray, and who had died within twelve months of returning to their native land. He thought, also, if the memorial was erected application could be made to the Prime Minister (Eight Hon. W. F Massey) and the Minister of Defence (Hon. Sir James Allen) for some field-guns. Towards the erection of a fitting memorial in the cause of those who were worthy of it, Cr Bilkey handed in a cheque for £2O, and moved that the Council donate £SO towards the object. The Mayor (Mr H. G. H. Mason) in seconding the motion, said that there were two separate questions involved, firstly the erection of a roll of honour of all who had gone from the Borough, and secondly the matter of the erection of a permanent memorial First of all, he continued, before anything should be done, they would have to assure themselves that the County Council would co-operate with them. The motion was adopted and Cr Bilkey was heartily thanked for his donation, a deputation consisting of Crs A. B. Barter, J. Bilkey, and J. T. Stembridge, being appointed to wait on the County Council. At yesterday's meeting of the County Council the deputation was in attendance and Cr Barter, acting as spokesman, requested that the County should set up a sub-committee to work with the Borough Council, with the result that Crs Reid, Thomas, Montgomene, and the Chairman, were appointed to meet the Borough Council, and to report at the next meeting on the progress made.
