TOWN BOARD DISCORD

THREE MEMBERS RESIGN

The Tuakau Town Board seem far from being a happy family. A little time ago Mr Dynes Fulton, who only occupied seventh position on the poll at the biennial election, resigned his membership by reason that he considered that the electors had practically recorded a vote of want of confidence in him, and the late Mr J. H. Craig simultaneously resigned his seat expressing inability to work harmoniously with his fellow-members. Mr Craig, however, again came forward as a candidate and was successful in conjunction with Mr J. M. Mungall. Since then, however, Mr Craig has died and his seat is still vacant. Apparently two rival parties form the Board and a rather startling development occurred at the Board's meeting last night when, with Mr Barnaby tendering his resignation by letter, the Chairman (Mr W. J. Deeblel and Mr W. Gubb at the close of proceedings announced their vacation of office, it being understood that the resignations of all three were as a protest against works that in their opinion were necessary being unduly obstructed by other members of the Board. Messrs Mungall, Lapwood, and Geraghty are accordingly the only members of the Board to remain in office and as a total of four is required to constitute a legal quorum at meetings the Board's business in the meantime is rendered inoperative and things are at a standstill. With loan money available to be spent on road improvements this dead-look is to be regretted. Efforts are being made to induce Mr Dynes Fulton to again t ike up the reins of office as chairman but it is understood that if he fi Is the breach it will only be on the understanding that an entirely new Board is elected. Towards this end a meeting of ratepayers has been convened for Friday evening next to discuss the situation and, if possible, to arrange for a re-constructiou of the Board so that public interests may be advanced and not retarded.
