CORRESPONDENCE.
HYDROELECTRIC SCHEMIS FOR PAPATOETOE, MANU REWA, AND PAPAKURA. (To the Editor.) Sib,—ln the hydro electric scheme for the North Island, as laid before the House by the Minister for Public Works (as reported in the daily papers), two very important factors, especially interesting to the above districts, are therein revealed. Fint, that it will take something like ten years to complete the work i.e, supply to Auckland; and second, that authority would be given to local bodies to carry out local schemes. Some few years back the writer used his best endeavours to get the Auckland Gas Company to extend their mains to Manurewa. The Company sent their engineer to Manurewa, and together we made a survey of the district, and a tally of probable consumers. The report was later discussed by the Board of Directors, but largely owing to the cost of supply-pipes (through the war) the scheme was abandoned. Now, Sir, with the probable competition of electiicity, it is very doubtful if the Auckland Gas Company will further extend their mains. All these districts will shortly be in close competition with the RomueraOra-kei-Panmure new suburban railway district. However, we must make substantial progress, and to wait ten years for a power and lighting scheme is not good business. During the last five or six years (and with the above object) several meetings have been held in several parts of our district, and might I now suggest that the "interested parties" come forward at an early date, and convene a conference of representatives of these local bodies. *" Yonrs, etc., ENOS 8. PEGLER. Manurewa.
