PAPAKURA.

In common with other places the influenza epidemic is prevalent in severe form at Papakura. The Town Board, realising the seriousness of the position, have secured the use of the Parish Hall and have transformed that building into a temporary hospital with an equipment of 10 beds. The most urgent cases requiring treatment are being acuommodat.d there and a number of voluntary nurses have been enrolled. A supply of medicine has been received from the Health Department and is being distributed The Methodist Sunday School has also been requistioned as a temporary hospital and this building is eminently suited for the purpose. in order to expedite matters of urgent cases requiring attention an office has been established in the Broadway with the Town Board's Clerk, Mr Harold Wilson, in charge. When in need of attention the public are advised to make enquiries at this bureau. Owing to the influenza epidemic the usual monthly meeting of the Papakura Town Board convened for last evening was postponed. Mr D. W. Jones, a member of the fowu iioard, is suffering fiom a severe attack of influenza. The death took place on Sunday at the Auckland Hospital from pneumonia following on influenza of Mrs Johnston, wife of Constable Johnston, police constable in charge of Papakura. The deceased lady, prior to developing the complaint, rendered nursing assistance to the late M r J. Craies and Mrs Craies, who were victims of the scourge. Bhe was taken late last week to the Auckland public hospital in a low condition and never rallying passed av. ay on Sunday. The late Mrs Johnston came to about 12 months ago, with her husband and family of three children from Dannevirke, Hawke's Bay, where thoy had resided for several years, having previously lived at Gisborne. Constable Johnston is at present an inmate of one of the temporary hos pitals at Papakura. His condition is grave. The death roll from influenza at Paj.akin a includes Mr W. Wallace, the head of the late firm of of Wallace and Sadler, carters and contractors Mr Wallace fell a victim to the disease at the end of October and passed away on the morning of November 2nd. It is with deep regret we have to record the death of a former wellknown Pukekohe resident in the person of Mr Jain/a Craies, who succumbed at the Auckland Hoa pital on Thursday last from pneumonia following on an attack of influenza. The deceased was in the employ of the New Zealand Railways Department as an engine driver and was formerly stationed at Pukekohe but latterly at Papakura. He had been ill a very short time and was only admitted to the hospital on Wednesday. The late Mr Craies, who was 37 years of age, hailed from Invercargill. He was one of the unsuccessful candidates at the recent Papakura Town Board election He is survived by a widow and five young children.
