The influenza epidemic is at its height in the country districts as well as in the city of Auckland, causing in many cases pneumonia and other complications. The necessity of rooms being adequately ventilated is stressed by the doctors towards combating the disease. Private Jack O'Malley, who recently returned invalided from the front, paid a visit to Pukekohe yesterday and in the evening was entertained at dinner by Mr Frank Perkins, of whose staff he was a member prior to his enlistment. The gathering took place at Mr Perkins' residence and a most enjoyable evening was spent.

The importance of Austria's withdrawal from the war was, thanks to the prompt action of Mr Frank Perkins (the Chairman of the School Committee) yesterday afternoon impressed upon the minds of the school children of Pukekohe at a patriotic gathering that was hurriedly convened in the Premier Hall. The pupils of the Public and Convent Schools assembled at Perkins' Corner and marched in procession to the hall, many parents being present. The proceedings, which were characterised by marked enthusiasm, opened with "The National Anthem," and then the children joyfully sang various patriotic items, including " Rule Britannia " Addresses explanatory of the good news that had come through were delivered by the Mayor (Mr H. G. R. Mason), Mr Frank Perkins, and the Rev J. F. Martin, and the building rang with a volume of clnera that has probably never before boen e quailed in Pukekohe.
