MANUREWA.

MANUREWA TOWN BOARD The ordinary monthly meeting of the Manurewa Town Board was held in the Public Hall, Manurewa on Friday, October 25th, when there were present (Messrs C. H. Lupton (chairman), Qeorge Coxhead, T. J. Corin, Enos 8. Pegler, E. Butterworth, F. Woods and G. Bmith together with the Clerk (Mr H. Kay). RAILWAY LOADING BANK In connection with the raising of the loading bank at the Manurewa Railway Station the District Engineer advised the Board that arrangements had been made to raise the bank to the standard height, viz. 2 feet 5 inches above the railway line level. TOWS BOAHD ELECTIONS With regard to the Board's proposal relative to having the date of Town Board elections brought into line with those of City Councils and Borough Councils replies supporting the movement were received from a number of Town Boards. HILL ROAD A firm of Auckland solicitors, on behalf of the proprietors, asked the Board to accept dedication of Hill Road leading to Puriri Park Estate. It was decided to accept dedication thereof on condition that the road was regraded; that the footpath was cleared of weeds and sanded ; and that a suitable pitched or concrete crosemg was constructed at the entrance to Mr Nathan's cowsheds and yard, and the water channel on the north side of the crossing was deepened. The actual acceptance of dedication when the work was completed was left in the hands of the Works Committee. DEPUTATION TO COUNTY COUNCIL i It was decided that the Board as a j body should wait on the Manukau ! County Council at its next meeting 1 to ask that the rates collected in the Town Board area should be expended on the roads under the Board's jurisdiction and also with the cbject ] of the Council taking over and main- 1 taining the Weymouth Boad. It ] was futher arranged to bring under j the Council's notice the two bad Kullies on the north side of Manu- 6 rewa School with a view to having * them attended to. t STATION APPROACH c The dangerous state of the ap- i proach to the railway station gates 1 was brought up by Mr Pegler. He c stated that as the approach was at c present it was positively dangerous v and he moved that the hollow c should be filled in to the full width o of the road This was seconded by a Mr Woods and carried unanimous- t ly. f INSPECTION OF ROADS ? The Chairman reported that a several members of the Board had a recently inspected the various roads 0 under the Board's control and on the f, motion of Mr Pegler it was decided that a full report of the inspection j, should be prepared for the next v meeting. MISCELLANEOUS il The Works Committee was in- b structed to prepare an estimate of k the cost of forming and tarring and & sanding the footpath on the new k portion of Hill Road. h It was decided to have Massey tl Road footpath attended to. n finance Accounts amounting to £122 8s j £ 3J were approved and passed for j payment. y The chainran stated that when £ the rates were all in the Board would have about £430 to work on for the year. That amount did not include j the accounts passed for payment that evening and when that amount was g deducted the working balance would only amount to about £3OO. He j advised the Board to go carefully in j, expt 1 diture. 5 THE CLERKSHIP a In accordance with notice of ii motion given at tbe previous meet- p iDg, the Chairman proposed that the fc resolution appointing Mr A. Q. Mahee as permanent clerk be reecin- ( ded and that the acting clerk Mr H. t Kay be permanently appointed. <3 Mr Pegler seconded. 1 Mr Corin strongly opposed the c motion on principle. He stated that t Mr Mabee was on active service and he 1 thought his services ought to be le- c tained. Local bodies similarly situ- t ted were, he said, leaving the office ( open to anyone on active service and 1 the Board ought to do the same t He thoroughly approved of the ap- 1 point ment of Mr Kay because he was t an able man but he objected to auy- j one being permanently appointed in t place of a man who was fighting for 1 his King and country. On principle J he considered that tbe position should i be left open. j Mr Coxhead endorsed Mr Corin's < remarks. 1 Mr Pegler thought there was no 1 principle involved at all. 1 The motion, on being put, was f carried, Messrs Corin and Coxhead dissenting.
