PAPATOETOE.
BOLL OF HONOUB Quite a gloom was cast over the Papatoetoe district on Saturday last when intimation was received of the death in action of Privates Beg. Watson, Everitt Gillard, B Harry, A. E. Whiteley and W- J« Dawson. Mr J. A. Bradstreet, the vice president of the Tennis Olub conveyed the sad news to the tennis players and bowlers in the afternoon and as a mark of respect play was entirely suspended for the day. Private Watson was the only son of Mr John Watson, the chairman of the Papatoetoe Boad Board. Born at Papatoetoe he was educated at the Papatoetoe Public School and afterwards at a secondary school in Auckland. He was associated with the Papatoetoe Presbyterian Bible Class and was also a highly esteemed member of the Tennis Club. After leaving school he followed farming pursuits and was engaged in that capacity when he volunteered for the front. Pte. Everitt Gillard was the only son of Mr Arthur Gillard, of Bangitoto Koad, Papatoetoe. He was born at East Tamaki and was educated at the Flat Bush public school. After leaving school he was employed on his father's farm at East Tamaki and upon Lis father retiring from active farming duties Pte. Gillard took over the property and was engaged therein when he answered the Empire's call for men. About 12 months before volunteering for active service Pte. Gillard had the misfortune to lose his wife. He was always a keen sport and took a great interest in the Pakuranga Hunt Club of which he was a member. He was about 30 years of age. The Bed Cross shop in Shortland Street, Auckland, was recentJy for the week-end in charge of a band of Papatoetoe ladies, viz, the Misses Sutton, Carruth (2), Goodfellow (2), Weston, Watson, Hallbury, and Cutforth. Good business was done, the takings amounting to £43 15s 7d despite counter patriotic functions in progress at the time.
