fcOLL OF HONOU& Gunner Tom Burton Wade Whiteley, who was killed in action on Oct 11th, was the only son of Mr Tom Whiteley, builder, of Otahuhu. He was 29 years of age. Born at Otahuhu he was educated at the Otahuhu Public Bchool and at the Auckland Grammar School. tJpoh leaving school he was employed with his father in building operations in Auckland and Otahuhu. When war broke out Gunner Whitely twice volunteered but was rejected. He however, was subsequently accepted for service and departed with the 27th Beinforcements. He was attached to the Machine Gun Corps and saw a good deal of fighting. The deceased soldier, who was well known in Otahuhu Was secretary of the Otahuhu Tennis Club and was a highly esteemed member of the Methodist Church. He was one of the Methodist Bunday School teachers and acted as secretary and librarian for the congregation. At the Methodist Church on Sunday last a memorial service was held in his honour, feeling reference being made to nis sterling christian character. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends is extended to the bereaved family in their sad and irreparable lost. The Girls' Physical Culture Class of the Holy Trinity Church brought their season to a close with a public display on Thursday of last week. Despite the inclemency of the weather there was a crowded attendance, representative of all denominations. The items performed, although some were similar to those given on previous occasions, were all appreciated, and in many instances the pupils had to respond to encores. The class, which has been under the directorship of Miss Johnston, afforded testimony of the excellent results tf the painstaking efforts of the instructress and amply deserved the numerous outbursts of applause which greeted the various items The financial results derived from the display were devoted to the local Patriotic Fund, which judging by the large attendance and the number of tickets sold should be substantially increased. It is worthy of note that since the war began the money derived from .these displays have been given to patriotic purposes. The fiev. H. Mason presided and during the interval paid tribute to the patriotic spirit which prompted the class in their efforts to augment patriotic funds. He aUo laid stress on the educational value of the exercises in building up a healthy phytique.
