DRURY.
A SUCCESSFUL DANCE. Under the auspices of the John Bull Comedy Company a plain and fancy dress ball was held in the Drury Public Hall on Friday last, the proceeds being devoted to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. The interior of the building was tastefully decorated with greenery while the walls were draped with the ensigns of Britain and her Allies, a most brilliant spectacle being presented. There was a large attendance, including representatives from all over the district, several coming from Pukekohe and Papakura. The following were among those altired in fancy costumes, viz.: Misses Jessie Wilson (Minnie Haha), Hanson (Dutch Girl), Eva Johnson (Dutch Boy), V. Waddell (John Court L'd.), J. Sutherland (Japan), H. Douglas (Egyptian Ladv), N. Girdwood (Folly), E. Flanagan (Little Red Riding Hood), N. Flanagan (Australia), Ivy Sutton (Soldier Boy), M. Lawrie (Soldiers' Parcels), Jessie Blake (Egyptian Maid), F. Oldham (Ragtime), L. Harrison (Italy), Hamilton (Buttercup), J. Perry (Sailor Girl), Speechy (Maori Girl), D. Perry (Moonstruck), Mrs May (Grannie) and Mr W. Sutherland (Lady Pierrot). The voting for the prizes for the best fancy costumes resulted in Miss Je.s e WiUon and Mr W. Sutherland annexing the trophies Dance music was provided by Mrs Lodge, Mrsßussell, Misses D. and J. Blake, Master Trevor Lodge and Messrs H. Cossev (violin) and C Morgan (piano) and W. Sutherland. During the evening a number of vocal items were rendered by Miss Madigan, Miss F. Oldham playing the accompaniments. Refreshments were handed round and were duly appreciated.
The success of the function was due to the combined efforts of the committee, who worked most energetically. ' As a result the Wounded Soldiers' Fund was considerably aug;r.ent«d.
At the last monthly meeting of the Drury-Runciman Women's Patriotic League Mrs MeMuitrie presided and afternoon te* was provided by Mrs E. Bremner. The undermentioned goods were handed in for transmission to Auckland, viz:—7l pairs sox by Mesdames McMurtrie 7 pairs, Strong 6 pairs, Morrison 5 pairs, Bob'on, John Blake, and Barclay 4 pairs each, W. Glasson, Appleby, Johnston 3 pairs each, T. Brooks, Hewlett, James Blake, W. Bremner 2 pairs each, .Lodge, W. Cossey, Girdwood, Flanagan, Bregman, Fjfe 1 pair each, Misses Elsie and Mavis Morrison 4 pairs each, Madge and Hilda Morrison 3 pairs, Glasson, Wardell, Allan, Joyce Bremner one pair each, together with 3 helmet caps and one scarf by Mrs John Dickson.
Recently in tho Presbyterian Church Miss G. McNaughton was the recipient of a haudsomo silver kettle and serviette ring, presented by the congregation on her resigning her posi'ion of organist, also a silver centre piece from the Sunday school scholars, as a mark of their esteem and recognition of her services as organist and teacher. The presentations were made by the Rev Hales, in well chosen words.
The work of demolition of the Drury station and goods shed goes on merrily and the transferring of the portions of the buildings to their sites at the new central station is being proceeded with. The station, which will serve the Drury-Ruici-man district, is well on towards completion and will be up to-date in every way. The Franklin County Council teams aid men are now busy at work forming the road that will lead from Drury to the station, and given good weather it should soon be complete.
