DEATH OF THE REV G. BURGESS
The death occurred from paralysis at his residence at Papakura on Wednesday last of the Rev Geo Burgess, F.R.A.S., after a fortnight's illness. Deceased was bom in Linconshire, England, and first went to Australia. In August, 1893, he arrived in Auckland from Melbourne and was appointed to the pastorate of Beresford street, Auckland, Congregational Church, which charge he held until July, 1897. Afterwards he was stationed at Timaru and on retiring from the ministry owing to failing health he took up his residence at Papakura where he resided until his death. Deceased was the first chairman of the Auckland District Conciliation Council before a permanent Commissioner was appointed and a man more highly esteemed could not be found. He was recognised as one of the most cultured and fluent speakers in Auckland, his lectures on astronomy being always welcomed by the public Deceased leaves a widow, two sons and a daughter to mouin their loss. One of the sons is Brigadier General Burgess DS.O., who is with the Australian Forces in France.
