BUCKLAND.
SUCCESSFUL JUMBLE SALE,
The Bucklsnd Ladies' Patriotic League are not letting the grass grow under their feet. Quite recently they successfully emerged from the Bed Cross campaign and they launched out in an endeavour to raise funds to provide the Buckland boys in the trenches with Christmas parcels. This latter escay took the form on Friday last of a monster jumble sale in the Buckland Hall, the effort despite short notice proving a brilliant success, from all view points especially the monetary point of view as some £75 was secured.
The function was opened in the afternoon by Mr H. Wilcox, the riding representative on the Franklin County Council, who referred briefly to tbe heroic deeds performed by the soldiers and the efforts of the ladies to provide parcels for the approaching festive season. Mr Wilcox added that those who were fortunate enough to remain at home for Christmas were unanimous in not forgetting " the boys" who were doing their little bit to uphold the traditions of the British Empire. The hall was tastefully decorated with greenery and a small placard inscribed " For Our Boys" was conspicuously displayed. Various stalls were elaborately arranged round the interior of the building and articles and edibles of all kinds occupied the tables. The goods for the stalls were liberally donated and the thanks of the committee aro due to donors thereof.
The stalls and stall-holders were - Jumble stall: Mesdames B. King, Partridge, Waterhouse and Miss Johnston ; needlework stall: Mesdames Avery, Shaw and Greenway ; mystery stall: Misses Allan and Davy; sweets stall: Misses Green, Wright and McKean; produce stall: Mebdame* Murray, Neal and James The afternoon tea department was in the capable hands of Mrs E. Appleby and Miss Wilcox who as well as acting as waitresses provided the necessary edibles. The
live and dead stock were in charge of Messrs E. Appleby and Geo. Greenway, while Mr E. Allan, of Buckland, officiated as auctioneer, and as a result of the sale about £25 was netted.
In the evening Mr A. P. Horne presided and items were contributed to by Miss Avery (recitation), Mrs James Wylie (violin solo), Miss Louie Shaw (fancy dance), and Miss Edna Wright (song). During the day various guessing competitions were earned through, the winners being as followslced cake (correct weight) slbs lOJoz. Mr F. Hewitt; currant cake (correct weight 3lbs 2oz), Mrs Steenson ; and bucket of eggs (83 .eggs) Mr W. Murray. The proceedings were wound up in the evening with a dance, Mr Innes Wilcox proving a capable M.O.
The success of the sale is due to the untiring efforts of the Committee and helpers, especially the President (Mrs James Wylie), the joint secretaries (Misses Neal and Davy) and the Treasurer (Miss Johnston) The local children also rendered valuable assistance and the ladies desire to especially thank them for their help.
Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor each child was given a ticket for the mystery box.
