PATUMAHOE.

HARD-UP SOCIAL

One of the most successful gatherings ever held in Patumahoe eventuated in the hall on Thursday, September 19th, in the form of a " Hard Up" social organised in support of the local Red Cross effort. The Grand March was an imposing spectacle, costumes of the needy variety being much in evidence. During the evening a mook court was carried out, Mr J. Golds worthy, adorned with a wig and a cow cover for a hood, acting as Judge and Mr Melvill Crispe figuring as Crown Prosecutor, with "roughies" constituting the jury. Various offenders had to pay penalties for "crimes," i one individual, for being 1 charged with hoarding, or being, fat } to the detriment of the nation since fat was required for munitions, another being prosecuted for being too thin and thus not providing fat, whilst the possession of too many Christian names was also the subject of a charge. Suitable penalties were inflicted in every case.

Little Miss Doreen Brady effectively sang " The Copper Trail " and as a result over 500 pennies were thrown upon the stage for the beMug*. fit of the fund.

Dancing was zealously engaged in and a most enjoyable evening was spent. Sarprise packets met with a ready sale.

As Hon. Sees, of the undertaking Messrs E. C. Cuff and Melvill Crispe worked most untiringly. The finan ial result of the socifld wa* that some £4O was added to tb®, Pi.tumahoe fund, which now stands at about £3OO, which amount, it is confidently anticipated, w|ll be materially increased by a concert to be held next month. Ia connection with the Social, holders of winning surprise picket tickets are requested by the Eloii. Sees, to make application for theiY prizes.
