WOMEN'S PATBIOTIC LEAGUE
The annual meeting of the Otahphtt branch of the Auckland flKxien ; s Patriotic League was held W<£he Parish Hall, Otahuhu, on Saturday, the 17th inst. There was a fair attendance and the chair was occupied by Mrs H. Mason in the absence of the President (Mrs A. McDonald). The report and balance sheet having been presented and approved the following officers for the ensuing {ear were elected, viz:—President, fa McDonald ; Vice-Presidents, Mrs H. Hall and Mrs Muir; Secretary and Treasurer, Miss Pilkington. The whole of the members were constituted a committee and sub-com-mittees were appointed to give special attention to the departments of sewing, woollen work, arranging •f entertainments, and collecting of literature.
, The object of the League is mainly for providing of articles of use and oomfott for men at the front Members have worked enthusiastically both at weekly gatherings and in their own homes and as a result of their labours valuable consignments Of goods have been forwarded to the central agency for dispatch to the Various fields. These goods include „ hundreds of pairs of socks and suits of pyjamas, woollen helmets, soaives, mittens, gloves, eye bandages, etc., all of which will prove invaluable if "our boys" have to spend another winter in the trenches. In addition to these parcels have been sent for the benefit of mine sweepers, French children, and to the Bombay hospital Money has also been contributed to the Dominion Gift Fund to provide monthly gifts for the soldiers and fot Christmas parcels, of which grateacknowledgements have been received. Packages of books and magazines have been sent for the use of the transport and hospital ships. Altogether the branch may be congratulated on the result of the year's efforts, and doubtless it will continue the good work with equal energy should the duration of the war call for prolonged help.
After an absence of ten years, Mr "Bert" Fernleigh, who was formerly in business as a saddler in Otahuhu, recently paid a visit to Otahuhu and was much impressed with the improvements he saw in the town and district. Mr Fernleigh thinks Otahuhu has a great future before it. Mr Fernleigh is now residing at Palmerston North.
The annual meeting of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church was held on Friday evening last when there was a good attendance. The Pastor (the Rev. W. T. Currie) presided. The report of the year's work, as submitted by Miss J. McArthur, the Secretary, was regarded as satisfactory and an increased inembership was recorded One noticeable feature of the Church Work favourably commented on was the deep interest taken in the work by the young people. This was as encouraging. To the Committee the following new members were added, namely, Miss Wingate and Messrs G. Nicholson and W. J. Dinnison, whilst Mr W. J. O'Hara was reelected. During the evening musical items were contributed and refreshments were served.
