PUKEKOHE BOWLING CLUB
Annual Meeting
There was a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of Pukekohe Bowling Club held at the Masonic Hall, Pukekohe, on Wednesday evening last, Mr Frank Perkins (President) occupying the chair.
REPORT AND BALANCE SHEET The Committee's annual report stated that the Club closed the year with a credit balance of £l3 9s 5d as against £7 10a the previous year and there were no liabilities on the working account. The membership had increased from 67 to 75. The thanks of the Club were due to Messrs Armstrong and Wright for their valuable work on the green, thereby saving the Club the salary of a caretaker. The Committee, however, considered that the time had arrived for the club to employ the services of a caretaker, thus relieving many members of so much voluntary labour. During last season four members left for the front, vis, Messrs Baird, Bowden, Qribble and Short. In conclusion, the committee trusted that the friendly spirit shown by all the members would long continue. The balance sheet showed that the receipts, including subscriptions £159 12s had amounted to £233 5s 4d, whilst the expenditure, including a payment of £3O for reduction of mortgage, and £27 for interest totalled £219 15s lid. The assets of land and buildings etc., were set set forth at £667 0s lid as against the only liability, viz a mortgage of £4OO.
Mr. Gill congratulated the Club on the fact that they had not only paid £SO off the mortage during the year but had closed the year with a satisfactory credit balance. That position he considered Was very gtatifyine. (Applause) The report and balance sheet were then adopted.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS The following officers were elected viz:—Patron, Mr W. Roulston; President, Mr H. Bockett, VicePresidents, Messrs O M. Wright and C. K. Lawrie; Oreen Superintendent, Mr Hodgson Keith; Deputy Superintendent, Mr R. Fitness; Treasurer, Mr W. T. Jones; Secretary, Mr A- B. Barter; Auditor, Mr J. G. Russell.
On a ballot Messrs Duncan Roulston, P. Perkins, A. P. Daysh and Gill were appointed as the Committee and Messrs D. Roulston, W. Gribble and A. Barter were elected as the Match Committee.
In connection with the re-election of Mr Barter as Secretary, Mr C. M. Wright paid a high tribute to the able manner in which he had carried out the secretarial duties and on his motion it was unanimously agreed that it be placed on record the Club's appreciation of Mr Barter's services.
SELECTION OF TEAMS Th 3 question of the appointment of a Selection Committee in place of a sole selector to choose teams for matches was discussed And Mr Lawrie was in favour of the appointment of a sole selector being disperse with whilst Mr C. Clarke argued that the advantages of having a committee in place of a sole selector were many. On the motion of Mr Clarke it was agreed to appoint a Selection Committee.
I APPOINTMENT OF CARETAKER Mr Monty Wright, speaking in the interests of the Club, urged that it was time a permanent caretaker was appointed to look after the green. It was not right, he said, nor should it he expected, that members should continue to carry out such duties. The extra cost which would be necessary to meet the caretaker's wages would necessitate, he said, increasing the membership fee. He suggested that the extra £IOO a year to provide for the salary of a caretaker could be best met by raising the membership fee from two guineas to three guineas.
Mr Barter supported the proposed appointment and as the meeting was evidently in agreement it was arranged that a special meeting should be convened when a motion would be submitted for an increase in the membership fee. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to Mr Frank Perkins as the retiring President and to Mr George Armstrong for his labjurs as honorary caretaker.
