MANUKAU COUNTY COUNCIL

Monthly Meeting. At the usual monthly meeting of the Manukau County Council, held in Auckland on Tuesday last, there were present Crs A. D. Bell (Chairman), F. M. Waters, F. H. Brownhill, 8. W. House, A. Muir, J. Luke, and A. E. Hattaway, with the Clerk (Mr Alex Bell). Auckland's new station In a circular letter Mr M. Irwin, on behalf of the Civic League, Auckland, asked the support of the Council to the movement for Breakwater road instead of Eden street, as designed by the Kailway Department, to be the site of Auckland's new railway station. No action was taken. EOAD WORKS' ESTIMATES With regard to any items on the Appropriations in respect of road works unspent at the 31st March last a communication was received from the District Engineer, asking the Council if they wished any votes transferred and to state what works were considered urgent, and also to inform him of any proposal to increase the amount of any item on the Appropriations The matter was left to the Clerk to deal with. MANTJBEWA BRIDGE LOAN Referring to the proposed overhead bridge at Manurewa the Manurewa Town Board wrote that the original estimate of £1750 for the construction of the approaches to the bridge would be more than covered by a loan of £2OOO plus ten per cent if necessary. They suggested that tenders should be called for the work. They further pointed out that with the £3OO guaranteed by Messrs Phillips and Gilbert, adjoining owners, about £2300 would be available. As to the payment of the preliminary expenses incidental to the loan the Board said they would guarantee the same. On the motion of Cr Muir it was decided to draft a petition for signature by those ratepayers within the special rating area for steps to be taken de novo owing to lapse of time. HYDRO ELECTRIC TOWER Mr Syd. J. Harbutt, on behalf of the Auckland Provincial Industrial Association, wrote urging the impoitance of developing the hydroelectric power in the Auckland Province and inviting the members of the Board to attend a conference on the subject to be held at the Town Hall, Auckland, on Friday, the 30th inst. It was resolved that a representative from the Council should attend the conference. OTAU DOMAIN In reply to a communication from the Lands and Survey Department, Wellington, the Council, as successors to the late Wairoa Road Board, agreed to take over the control of the Otau Domain, Councillor Brownhill remarking that at some future time it might prove a valuable acquisition. ORERE SETTLEMENT A deputation consisting of seven settlers from the Orere Settlement waited on the Council and asked that the Council would continue the work which had already been done so that proper access could be provided to their properties. Mr A. Rowlands, speaking on behalf of the deputation, pointed out that they desired the culverts to be put in and the road formed so that the road could be made suitable for use by a horse and trap. They did not desire that the road should be metalled at present but only that the formation of tha road should be proroeded with. At present the conditions were intolerable. Papakura Riding : Repairs to South road and to the decking to Wiri bridge have been done. The Manurewa-Brook by road was now in a first-class order. Repairs to Wiri road have been done but the expenditure of a further £l2 would be necessary.

Wairoa Riding: In the metalling of Thorp's Quarry road the County team and men have been chiefly employed for the month. Mr Cashmore has offered to supply four stringers for the bridge over the creek near his barn on Orere road, free of charge, if the Council would erect and find the decking. The Foreman suggested that the offer should be accepted. The Foreman further reported that the Quarry Inspector had visited the County quarries and had expressed his satisfaction with the manner in which they had been conducted. The report was adopted.
