Pojs or girls living in Pukekobe, he (mid, were able to proceed daily by train to Auckland to attond a school there but that, even With its natural disadvantages, was not possible for children from the back parts of tho County, whereas they would be able to prosecute j their studies in Pukekohe. '

Two additional cases of diphtheria were notified from the Borough of Pukekohe last Saturday. The epidemic is also claiming victims at Waiuku.

The alteration of interested parties is again drawn to the meeting, convened by the Franklin County Council, to be held tomorrow (Wednesday) at 2 pm, at Faerata in Mr Schlaepfer's shed, to consider the question of raising a loan for metalling the roads in that district.

The attendance of ratepayers is requested at the meeting to be held to-morrow (Wednesday) evening in the Masonic Hall, Pukekohe, when the Borough Council's scheme re the proposed loan to secure a site for a techinal high school will be fully explained. A full house was again recorded at the Premier Hall, Fukekohe, last night when the musical melange with tableaux vivants, so successfully produced a fortnight ago under the direction of Mr Cecil Roadley, was repeated. The delight of the audience at the excellence of the entertainment provided was demonstrated by insistent encores in nearly every instance. At the interval Mr C. K. The advantages of education as demonstrated by the war were commented on by the Mayor of Pukekohe (Mi H. G. R. Mason) and Mr D. R. Hamilton last Thursday whilst appealing to the Franklin County Council for support to the Technical High School scheme. His Worship pointed out that the Germans prior to the war had excelled in certain manufactures simply as the result of knowledge gained by encouraging education in a practical form rather than in a theoretical sense. Mr Hamilton also mentioned that in nearly every instance men who had risen from the ranks to the position bf officers were ex-pupils of a secondary school, whereby they had been afforded education not imparted at a primary school and which enabled them to secure commissions.

At the meeting of Directors of the New Zealand Dairy Association, Limited, held last Friday in Auckland, it was resolved to make a further distribution of 4d per lb for butterfat supplied during the past season to the Association's butter factories for butter manufacture. This amount assumes and is subject to a further payment on account of profits under the Imperial Government scheme for the past season of I about 19s per cwt. less equalization •in respect of local business. The | amount coming to the Association from these profits has been estimated on a conservative basis and the final payment to suppliers is expected to be somewhat more than 4d per lb mentioned above. Of this payment of 4d per lb 2d will be paid early in September and the balance will, subject to the foregoing realization, be paid when the present accumulation of butter has been cleared and the profit payments from the Government are received. Some of the vicissitudes of backblock life were experienced last week by a " knight of the hammer " who is not unknown in Pukekohe, his conclusions being that although complaint is frequently made of the condition of the roads in the Lower Waikato, they are more or less perfection compared with the highways in the north. For the purposo of returning from a sale, which he had conducted, to the nearest railway station, eight miles distant, he was given a mount. A boy's saddle was the only equipment of the sort available and as " Mr. Auctioneer " is of somewhat portly build and broad dimensions he more than overshadowed the scanty seat afforded, whilrt his discomfort was intensified by a broken strap causing one stirrup leather to be shorter than the other. When the journey was concluded, the eight miles often through slush and mud up to the horse's girth taking two hours and a half to accomplish, our hero was both weary and tender and he < onfesses that he experienced the most unpleasant ride he had ever had in his life.
