PATUMAHOE.
WAB ANNIVERSARY MEETING In accordance with a notice published in the "Times," a meeting of residents of Mauku district, was held in the Palumahoe Ball last Sunday afternoon to celebrate the fourth anniversary of the declaration of war on Germany by Great Britain. Mr J Henry was appointed to preside and in speaking of the object of the meeting emphasised the fact that the Empire was fighting a defensive war to pi eßei ve our freedom and the freedom of all free loving peoples. With our Allies we had sustained the cause for the last four years with varjiog success, but never with doubt as to the final result, and the end was now almost in sight. The entry of the people of that great free land of the " Stars and Stripes," has made victory assured, but we must not relax our efforts and must use every ounce of power to the end. The Chairman proposed the resolution " That on this the fourth anniversary of the declaration of a righteous war this meeting of the citizens of the Mauku district records its in flexible determination to continue to a victorious end the struggle in maintenance of those ideals of Liberty and Justice which are the common cause of the Allies." In seconding the resolution Mr Barton spoke eloquently on the action of the Allies, and the part Britain and her dependencies had taken in the conflict and urged that there should be no German peac j , or any peace talk encouraged until Germany's ideas of domination were laid low for ever by the complete and inequivocal success of the Allies. Then there should be arranged a just and honourable peace for the benefit and security of the world - a peace that would render impossible such another calamity as the world was undergoing at present.
After Messrs Guthrie, Crispe and Graham had spoken to the motion it was carried by acclamation. The singing of the hymn " All people that on Earth do dwell " and the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close.
