CLEVEDON.

BED CKOSS GATHERINGS. Clevedon is now in the throes of the Red Cross Carnival and money for the local Queen (Miss Dow) is rolling in weekly in goodly sums. The Editor of the special carnival journal " Publicity " is to be congratulated on his effort, the little paper containing each week items showing humour of no mean order, local hits, rhymes, etc, and altogether being just the right idea for a Carnival publication. Mr Gandy is the Editor and he deserves great praise indeed for the thoroughness of his production, thereby considerably augmenting the Carnival funds to which all the subscriptions are devoted. The chief events of the last fortnight have been a Sports Carnival held on the Showgrounds at which £l3O was taken ; a Bed Cross Stock Sale producing £900; a Fancy Dress Ball with receipts of £2l; and a School Concert realising £l7. To-day a monster bazaar is being held at the Clevedon Hall, while next week the chief item will be a Daflodil Show.

At the Carnival Sports great interest was taken in a tug-of-war between teams from Papakura, Alfriston and Clevedon, the hefty Alfriston farmers eventually proving victors.

The fancy dress ball was a brilliant function, the'kaleidoscopic effect of the vivid and varied dresses of both sexes presenting a picture of animation and brightness. The " Queen " attended in stat* with four ladies-in-waiting, viz., the Misses Stephens, Sutherland, Browne and McKenzie, while Miss Helen Bell and Miss Joyce Atchison acted as train-bearers. Some of the most striking fancy dresses were as follows :—" Belgium," Mrs E. Couldrey ; " Dutch Prau," Mrs Gandy; "Battledore and Shuttlecock," Mrs Rutherford ; '•Coon," Mrs Branson; "Powder Patch," Mrs Bell; " Weather,'' Miss Wilson ; " Eastern Princ-ss," Miss V. Mullins ; " Alphabet," Miss Noble ; " The Allies," Miss Smith ; " Italy," Miss Oram ; " Red Riding Hood," Miss A. Dow; " Indian Maid," Miss B. Mullins ; " Two Little Girls in Blue," Misses Wallis and McPherson; " Liberty," Miss E. Wallis; " Admiral," Mr Munro; "Lord Mayor," Mr Bell; " Boy Blue," Mr Gee ; "Coon,'' Mr Branson ; " Publicity," Mr Gandy ; " Clowns," Messrs Hyde and Gandy jor. ; " Jockeys," Messrs Paton and McCrae , " Baby," Mr W. Collett; •' John Bull," Master Rowe The School Concert held on Friday last was a great success, the hall being taxed to its utmost holding capacity. Three schools took part, viz., Clevedon, Wairoa South, and Ardmoro, the programme consisting of dialogues, action sings, recitations, tableaux, etc, as follows :—Overture, Miss Dow ; opening speech, A. Petersen (Ardtmre); duet and chorus, " Johnny Green," Ardmure ; recitation, H. Bell (daredon) ; sketch, " David Coppei field and the Waiter," J. B Allen and H.
