PAPATOETOE.

From existing indications it, seems doubtful if matter* for the formation of a Town Hoard for Papatoetoe will be forward enough to allow of the election taking place in September, when the ordinary Town Board biennial elections are due to be held. As announced in these columns last Friday, the proposed area to be governed by the Town Board has been fixed, but it is open for objections to bo made to the same up to about a month hence. A commission will subsequently sit to finally arrange the boundaries, and then time must be allowed for the preparation of the electors' list and for the other pro> cedure necessarily attendant to an election.

The Papatoetoe Road Board, at its next meeting, viz., on Monday, August- sth. intends to strike a rate of j|d in the C for the current financial vear.

Papatoetoe's efforts in the interest, of the Red Cross Carnival were signalised on Friday evening last with a plain and fancy dress ball, which was held in the Town Hall, upwards of 300 people being present. At 8.15 the Grand March took place, the assembliiv-' of the many couples, charmingly attired in resplendent and varying colours, giving an additional brightness to an animated scene. Miss Goodfellow, as Carnival Queen, headed the procession, accompanied bv Mr. \V. J. Dilworth (Director of Ceremonies).

Soon after the .start, of the proceedings an amusing incident occurred, when Mr. David Burnside, in the character of " Guy Fawkes," was wheeled into the hall. Some of the company, doubting if the figure was alive, used pins on him, while Another put a penny in his month, but, despite these seeming annoyances, the individual remained obdurate. After being wheeled to.the end of the hall, much to the Mirpiise of the company.. " Guy Fawkes " suddenly jumped up and took up a collection on behalf of the Red Cross Fund, thus realising C2 'lO/-. It should be mentioned that, in addition to Mr. Dilworth. Messrs. N. McDonald and J. Derenzi rendered valuable assistance in directing the ceremonies.

Excellent music was provided I>y Hawthorn's Orchestra.
