OTAHUHU
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Council takes place next Thursday. At the fortnightly gathering of the St. Andrew's Club hold on Saturday last under tho presidency of Mr W. Gardiner " a pound " gift night took place, each person attending donating an article of 1 lb in weight. These were afterwards auctioned by tho Mayor (Mr A. McDonald) and realised £2 7s 6d, which sum was devoted to the Y.M.C.A War Fund. At the next fortnightly gathering the programme will be arranged aud contributed to by the male members only. The Otahuhu Patriotic Ladies are holding a social and tea in the Parish Hall on Saturday afternoon next to aid the Eed Cross funds. A meeting in connection with the Bed Cross Carnival was held on Thursday evening last in the Otahuhu Public Hall, presided over by the Mayor (Mr A. McDonald). Only one nomination was received for the position of Carnival Queen, viz, Miss Connie Lippiatt, who was unanimously elected Representatives were present from Westlield and it was stated that they were arranging to appoint a Queen for that locality. Twenty members wore elected to form a Committee and the officers appointed were : President, Mr A. McDoiyild; Treasurer, Mr W. J. Dinnison ; Auditor, Mr J. Hunter; and Secretary, Mr H, Wills. The Chairman outlined .the scheme of campaign to raise a largo sum for the Bed Cross and it is anticipated a good response will he forlln oming. Anniversary services in connection with the Otahuhu Methodist Church were held on Sunday laft whan the preacher at the morning find afternoon services was tho Rev. C. C. Harrison, Mr F. c'oiuter occupying the pulpit in the evening. Special hymns were sung and despite the unfavourable weather the attendances were satisfactory. A social is to be held this (Tuesday) evening. A meeting of ladies in connection with the Bed Cross County Campaign was held in the Parish Hall on Friday, there being a good attendance. Miss Tilkington was elected Hon. Secretary and various Committees were set up It was decided to open a Red Cross whop in the front portion of the premise* (ceupied by Miss A. Smith, costumier, the same having been kindly lent by her. The shop will bo known as " Miss Smith's Red Cross and will be open on Wednesdays and Fridays. Arrangements were made for a Rod Cross " At Home " on Saturday, the 29th, in the Patish Hall and also for a children's evening after the " At Home." That the members of the Otahuhu branch of the Women's Patriotic League are loyally undertaking their share in providing comforts for troops at the front is once more made evident by the fact that in addition to the usual monthly goods forwarded the following articles have recently been supplied for the benefit of soldiers in Mesopotamia, viz.: 24 scarves, 24 caps, G pairs mittens, 60 pairs socks, 6 belts, 2 pairs bed socks, 24 flannel shirts, 1 pair gloves and 2G pairs pyjamas, together with £lO for blankets donated by the Otahuhu Men's Patriotic Committee.
