CLEVEDON.

DISTRICT NEWS.

i EXIT "WHY ROAR" ROAD BOARD! (By "Rip Van Winkle") Tdo not think it proper to let the "Why Roar" Roar! Board die without using tho occasion for an appreciation of another most notable chairman, viz., " The Guide." He also occupied the chair for many years with groat effect, particularly to the chair Without doubt, he was a most useful and painstaking chairman to the district and, therefore, when ho retired, he also was treated with absolute non-recogni-tion of his services. The masterly way in which he handled the crab, in spite of its sidestepping and elusive movements, down the Whakatiddle road last year is surely worthy of praise, also his treatise on "Large and Small Potatoes" is surely a masterpiece and is to lie treated with the utmost respect. If only he could have had the handling of tho £2ooo—or is it £4ooo—(make it £6OOO Sam) rat#s next year, we would be certain of getting that path up to "the Sum mit," and possibly there might be road metal obtainable to keep up the soiid state of the roads and bridges he mentions in his letter, published in your columns of 11th June issue, which solidity, by the way, I went to 6iich trouble to dissaprove last year. In face of great opposition, he took advantage of the Government's present position, to propound that enthralling conundrum, "Does the Road Board know that the Country is at war," which shook the under standings of the City Fathers to their foundations. As the Road Board utterly ignored this most pertinent question, he then retired to I take his repose, not one word of public thanks or appreciation being tendered him—a sure sign that he had "done them brown." As it is written in Luke—or was it Johnathan— "Render unto the Road Board tho things that are Sam's and unto Sam nothing." CARNIVAL QUEEN CHOSEN A largo and enthusiastic meeting was held in the Clevedon Public Hall last Monday afternoon, Mr C. O. Munro presiding, to receire nominations and to elect a Queen for the Red Cross Queen Carnival for the Clevedon district. Tliren nominations were received n.nd on a ballot Miss Elsie Dow headed the poll with 202 votes, Mrs A O. McKenzie obtaining, 180 votes and Mrs A. D. Bell 121 votes. Miss Elsio Dow was accordingly selected. The various Committees in cotnection with the Carnival have set to work in real earnest and hope to raise not less than £2OOO.
