PAPAKURA.
PAPAKURA PUBLIC SCHOOL NEW CLASS-ROOMS OPENED. Despite the stormy weather on Wrdnesday pffernoon there was a representative gathering at the Papakura Public School to take part in the official opening of the class-rooms and additions to the Bchool. Amorg those present were Mrs Banme, Messrs J. D. McKenzie (Chairman) and Brinsden, representing the Auckland Education Board, with Mr E. C. Purdie, Senior Advisory Inspector; the Rev. VV. C Wood, Messrs D. B Stewart, 8. Erans, J. Murray, J. Andrews. J. E. Craies and A L. Turner (Papakura School Committee),* Messrs R. M. Gillespie, P. Holt and Harold Wilson (Papakura Town Board), C. H Lupton (Chairman Manurewa School Committee), R. H. C Gibson (Chairman Drury School Committee), with the Headmaster (Mr J. E Elliott) of the Papakura Public School)
The,Fev. Wood, Chairman of the Papaknra Pchool Committee, presided over the meeting which "was held in the" new lobby and classroom, the scholars being 'formed up in line in charge of their respective teachers. After the Binding of the National Anthem the Chairman welcomed the visitor 8.
Mr McKenzie expressed Lis pleasure at being present and congratulated the school on the f;„ct thnt it was now a first gra.le school wi; l i an increasing attendance. While he offered his congratulations he was sorry that the Departiuenr had not sanctioned larger improvements with more floor spacu to cope with the increased number of children att nding the school To M-« Baume was accorded the honour ot officially opening the new class-rooms This she did by unlocking the class-room and she expressed a hope th*t the children and teitcheis would both attain the highest succ 'B* productive with the greatest good. (Applause) r After this ceremony little Edith Tumer presented a handsome bouquet of flowers to Mrs Baume, which that lady graciously accepted. Mr Brinsden, in a cheery speech, told the scholars that th"jr greatesr aaset in life would be the education they received at the school and he urged them all to be ambitious and to aim at always being at the top. Mr Purdie also tendered words of advice.
Mr R. M. Gille.-pie, in expressing bis pleasure at beicg present, advo-" cated that a secondary t-chool should be established at Ptpabura. Iu concluding he congratulated Mr Elliott (the Headmaster) ar,d staff on the improvement in the school. The Kev. Wood reviewed the progress which had taken place in the school since he became associated with the management as Chairman of the Committee some years ago. Afternoon tea concluded the proceedings. It should be mentioned that the ■dMoJ has been remodelled by the addition of two class-rooms and a headmaster's room, while a new corridor measuring 65 feet by 8 feet his also been provided.
Under the presidency of Mr E. I) Mclennan a well attended meeting of the Bed Cross Carnival Committee was held in the Picture Hall or, Monday evening last. The Chair man announced that Mrs McLenna'n was unable to accept the position of Carnival Queen as suggested and Mrs A.. Baker was chosfln in hor place Mrs Baker thanked the meeting for electing her as Que-n and trusied that all w< nld w, )k amicably together to raise the necessary funds for Rod C-oss purposes. It was decided to h-.H a:, Art Union on the 13-1. July next when gifts to the value of £*2 would be disposed of So that the public should have an opno.tunity of meeting Mrs Baker a social will !,h held in the Picture Hall on Monday. the 24th, for that purpose Among other fixtures derided on were a Sports Meeting on the 29'.h June and a Stock Sale in August, while a Committee was formed consisting <i Mesdames Widdowson, N Walters, «£ d the Misses Bibhard and M Wood and Messrs A Willis, J Murray, C. Earl, Janus Crawford, A. Baker, with Mr S. Evans a convenor, to make arrangements for Surprise packets Altogether the meeting was a success and go«.d financial prospects ar« anticipated
