MANUKAU COUNTY COUNCIL.
\ Monthly Meeting. At the usual monthly meeting of I the Manukau County Council, held in Auckland on Tuesday last, there were present: Crn A. Bell (Chairman 1 , J.Luke, S. W. House, F. Waters, A. E. Hattaway, F. W. Brownhill, and A. Muir, with the County Clerk (Mr A. I). Bell). THE r.\TK Ml: AI.V.FI.T ROSS Before commencing the business of the Council Cr Hattaway, in, making reference to the sudden death of Mr Albert Eos?, moved that the Council's deepest sympathy [ be expressed and that the same be | placed on record on the Couccil's i minutes, said the late Mr Rots was a I public spirited man who had also I devoted much time to Patriotic work.—The resolution was carried in silence, all tho members standing. WAIROA MERGING Advice was received that notilioatiou appeared in tho N Z. Gazette of tho :30th May last of tho Special Order made by the Council merging the Wairoa Koad Board in the County as from tho Ist June last. UUtI.DING PERMITS Mr T. J. Corin, the Chairman of tho Manurewa Town Board, in a ! letter to the Council, lodged an I objection to buildings being erected j in the Manurewa district which were i unsuitable for residences. Ho menI tioned a special caso and suggested I that if a permit had. been issued that I stops .should bo taken to have the I building removed. ■ On the motion of Cr Muir it was | decided to obtain legal opinion as to I tho granting of building permits. PAPAKURA TOWN EXTENSION Tho Under Secretary of Internal j A flairs, Wellington, forwarded extracts from the N.Z. Gazeito relative to the alteration of boundaries of the Papakura Town District and to the exclusion from the Manukau County I of an area as described in tho I Schedule published in the Gazette referred to. COUNTY Et-El TIOXS j The support of (ho Council was I sought to resolutions passed by the ■ Wanganui County Council advocating (1) that tho date- for holding i County elections should be the same j as that for Municipal Councils and | (2) that no ratepayer be eligible to j vote at a County election unless his ! rates are first paid, ! Cr Waters considered that the I suggested improvement with regard j to the time of County elections wa9 a ] step in the right direction When a j County Councillor came into oilieo, , said Cr Waters, he was asked to ! adopt a balance-sheet of the previous i year of which he knew nothing. That placed in a somewhat false | opinion. Cr Luke also expressed himself in j favour of the resolutions and moved that support should bo given to 1 them.- This was agreed, to. CLAIM l-'Ol! DAMAGES A claim was made upon the i Council in a letter from Mr J. Stanton, solicitor, on behalf of the owner I of a horse whiih shied at a stone crusher working upon the East Tamaki road with the result that I damage was suatainc'l ti a cart to | the extent of £2 17s lid. Mr .Stanton maintained that when the Council
worked such a dangerous instrument as a stone crusher upon a public ioad it should take proper precautions to trevent horses from being frightened It was decided to obtain legal advice on the matter. A WAIROA COMPLAINT Cr Luke reported that complaints had been made by settlers in his Riding that the carcases of cattle belonging to an absentee owner of land on North road had not been buried, thereby causing a nuisance. It was decided to enquire into the matter and if necessary to take action. FINANCE Accounts amounting to £783 12s Od were passed for payment. TAPATOETOE DRAINAGE With reference to the Council's decision at tho last meeting that the complaint by Mr B. Barry with regard to the defective drain on his property on Kolmar road, Papatoetoe " would receive attention " Mr Barry again wrote asking that something should be done. It was resolved that Cr Waters and the Foreman should inspect the site and report at tho next meeting. foreman's report The report of the Foreman (Mr C. Dixon) was read as follows : Wairoa Riding: The five nine inch culverts at Otau Hill have been put in. :>0 yards of metal were necessary on the Brookby road. As authorised by the Chairman metalling the Quarry road had been commenced which will enable the Council to got metal when required. Mangere Riding: The ploughing, rolling and regrading of Glasgow's Hill have been completed, showing a great improvement. Mr McAnulty, tho contractor, is forming and metalling the approaches to the overhead bridge and the work is nearly completed. The temporary repairs to the new footpath on Massey road are in hand.
Papatoetoe Riding : In regard to the contract let to Mr H. Masters at the last meeting for laying drain and forming footpath nothing has been done with the exception of carting the pipes to the site. Complaint has been made that the pipes cause horses to shy. [ suggest that the Council should instruct tho Clerk to notify Mr Masters to proceed with the work. The contract for work at Leighton's gully let to Messrs Bellingham and Sherry has been completed and is satisfactory. With Cr Waters I have examined the bridge culvert near Mr Cox's gate on Ilowick road. It is showing signs of collapse and will need attention shortly.
Papakura Eiding : With regard to the complaint made by Mr Barnett for fencing on the public road on property purchased from Mrs Broady, Takanini, the owner denies that there is anyroad through his property and refuses to remove his fence. The County quarryman has been engaged on the scoria pit obtained from the Railway Department which has been improved as required by the Quarry Inspector. The roads generally in the Riding are in good condition with plenty of material on hand to last the winter.
Arising out of the Foreman's report, in which a suggestion was made that a Working Foreman should be engaged for tho Wairoa Riding, it was resolved on the motion of Cr Luke to invite applications for the post. The report was adopted.
